HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana men's basketball team picked up an 88-47 exhibition win Monday over Dillard at the University Center.
Senior forwards
Onochie Ochie and
DeVonte Upson led Southeastern (3-10) with 16 points each against Dillard (2-11). Upson's point total tied a career high, turning in several dunks.
"DeVonte is very athletic for a young man his size," head coach
Jay Ladner said. "He probably feels like Santa Claus came late because he finally had a chance to play against guys he was bigger than. We talked about pumping the ball down in the post. He went down there, posted up hard, grabbed a pass over the top and laid it in to start the game."
Upson's shot just 25 seconds into the game, off an assist by
Cedric Jenkins following a steal by
Joshua Filmore, gave the Lions a 2-0 lead.
Southeastern would push the first-half lead to 26 on
Dylon Maggio's layup with 1:40 remaining until the half. The lead would climb as high as 48 twice, with the last being on freshman
Bret Barclay's layup with 7:27 remaining in the game.
Joining Ochie and Upson in double-digit scoring were Filmore (10) and
Daniel Grieves (10). Maggio, a freshman from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, added eight points. Filmore handed out five of the Lions' 19 assists in the contest. Upson and Jenkins each grabbed a game-high six rebounds.
Southeastern shot 62.7 percent from the floor (37-of-59), including 35 percent from three-point range (7-of-20). The Lions converted 7-of-11 from the free throw line (63.6 percent).
Houston Chatman (14) was the lone Bleu Devil to score in double-digits, although Patrick Thompson and Tyrone Williams helped out with nine points apiece.
Dillard shot 32.6 percent overall (15-of-46), 11.8 percent from beyond the arc (2-of-17) and 75 percent from the free throw line (15-of-20).
Southeastern opens Southland Conference play at defending conference champ, and preseason favorite, Stephen F. Austin at 8 p.m. Monday.
