Lady Lions Clinch Southland Tournament Bid With Win At Lamar

Southeastern returns to conference tournament for second time in three seasons

BEAUMONT, Texas – Southeastern Louisiana clinched its spot in the 2014 Southland Conference Volleyball Tournament with a five-set win Saturday at Lamar, 25-22, 21-25, 25-22, 13-25, 15-13.

The win also gives the Lady Lions (10-16, 7-7 Southland) their most conference victories since the 2004 season. The team will make its second trip to the tournament in three seasons, heading to Natchitoches, Louisiana, Nov. 21-23.

Southeastern sits in seventh place, one-half game behind Houston Baptist. Lamar (4-22, 4-10 Southland), which is tied with McNeese, sits one game behind Nicholls State for the eighth, and final, spot in the tournament.

Tiffany Thomas, with 17 kills, led three Lady Lions in double-digit kills. Parrie Hartley, who turned in her third double-double of the season, posted 13 kills, and senior Elizabeth Ramee added 10 for Southeastern. Mikayla Shippy handed out 36 assists to pace the offense. Morgan Todd led the Lady Lions with 17 digs, and Hartley chipped in 11 to round out her performance.

As a team, Southeastern hit .231 (54 kills, 18 errors, 156 total attempts) and recorded five total blocks. Lamar compiled a .238 attack percentage (65 kills, 26 errors, 164 total attempts) and picked up eight total blocks.

Cortney Moore (22), Autumn Taylor (19), Chelseas Grant (14) and Amethyst Hollowell (10) all turned in double-digit kills for the Cardinals. Ashley Ellis dished out a match-high 59 assists. Megan Schwartz (21), Taylor (14) and Erika Rojas (13) were the team leaders in digs. Taylor's performance also gave her a double-double.

Southeastern returns home, Tuesday, to host Nicholls State (9-18, 5-9 Southland) in the 2014 home finale. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the University Center.
