NEW ORLEANS, La. – Zay Jackson scored at least 20 points for the second-straight game, but it wasn't enough as turnovers hurt Southeastern Louisiana in a 71-61 loss to Tulane, Friday, at Devlin Fieldhouse.
Jackson, a native of Hammond, Louisiana, followed up a career performance this past Wednesday with 22 points against Tulane (4-1), but 20 turnovers by Southeastern (1-5) translated into 19 free points by the Green Wave.
"I think you're seeing improvement from our team," Southeastern head coach
Jay Ladner said. "We expect to win and we're disappointed we didn't. We had our chances, but got in some foul trouble again. At the half, we had nine turnovers among our post players. Most of them were travels and we just didn't have the physicality to recover. I thought that was key, but despite that I thought we had a chance late with the game right around 10 points."
The Lions came out firing early.
Joshua Filmore and Jackson each sank a three-point attempt to put Southeastern up, 6-0, just 1:32 into the contest. Falling behind, the Lions tied it up, 14-14, with 14:52 to play in the half on a layup by
Daniel Grieves.
Southeastern took a 20-19 lead with 12:32 to play until halftime on another three from Filmore, but when the Green Wave answered with a three from Louis Dabney the Lions would wind up playing from behind the rest of the game. Tulane would lead by as much as 13 midway through the second half.
Jackson led all players in scoring. Filmore added 13 and
DeVonte Upson scored nine for the Lions. Upson hauled in a team-high six rebounds.
Southeastern shot just under 48 percent for the game (23-of-48, 47.9 percent), sinking 8-of-21 from three-point range (38.1 percent) and 7-of-9 from the free throw line (77.8%). The Green Wave converted 25-of-54 shots (46.3 percent) in the contest, shooting 36.8 percent from beyond the arc (7-of-19) and over 77 percent at the line (14-of-18, 77.8 percent).
Dabney's 19 points led Tulane, while Jay Hook added 16 and Jonathan Stark chipped in 12 points. Dylan Osetkowski led all players with nine rebounds.
Southeastern wraps up its participation in the Tulane Tournament with an 11 a.m. tip Sunday against Langston (2-3).
