First-Half Run Sparks Lions Past Langston

SLU closes out half on 13-0 run

NEW ORLEANS, La. – A late first-half run sparked Southeastern Louisiana, Sunday, at Devlin Fieldhouse as the Lions defeated a scrappy Langston squad, 92-80, in the Tulane Classic.

Southeastern (2-5) strung together a 13-0 run in the final 2:39 of the first half, coming from behind to grab the lead. Langston (2-3) held a 40-37 lead when the Lions began their run to close out the half.

Andrew Guillory started the run by converting a free throw attempt on the back end of a layup for a three-point play. Daniel Grieves, who poured in a career-high 16 points, gave the Lions a 42-40 lead on a layup with 1:59 to play in the half.

Guillory and Zay Jackson followed with layups before Onochie Ochie and Jackson finished off the scoring, each draining a pair of free throws.

Joshua Filmore scored a game-high 25 points, finishing two points shy of tying his career high set earlier in the week. Joining Filmore and Greives in double-digit scoring were Guillory (16), Onochie Ochie (13) and Jackson (12). Grieves snagged a game-high nine rebounds.

The Lions shot better than 50 percent for the second time this week, converting 32-of-61 attempts (52.5 percent). Southeastern was 6-of-17 from three-point range (35.3 percent) and 22-of-30 from the free throw line (73.3%).

Langston shot well early in each half, finishing 27-of-57 overall (47.4 percent).

Curtis Jones' 25 points led three Langston players in double-digit scoring. Karon Abraham and Daniel Mulamba added 15 points each. Jones, Mulamba and Myles Elgin each hauled in six rebounds as Langston out-rebounded the Lions, 37-29.

Southeastern heads to No. 8-ranked Gonzaga (6-0), Tuesday, for an 8 p.m. tipoff. The game will be televised by ROOT Sports-Northwest and can be heard locally on 90.9 FM KSLU.
