HAMMOND, La. – Joshua Filmore scored a career-high 27 points, Wednesday, and Southeastern Louisiana outscored Tennessee Tech by 35 in the second half on the way to an 86-65 win at the University Center.
Southeastern (1-4) picked up its first win of the season and the first under head coach
Jay Ladner. Trailing, 48-34, at the half, the Lions outscored Tech (3-2), 52-17, in the final 20 minutes of action.
"For the first time this year, I was embarrassed," Ladner said. "Not embarrassed that we were behind, but with the way we were behind. It was a lack of effort and energy, no leadership. At halftime, there were no tactic changes. The players remained the same. What changed was the interior of our team.
"Hopefully we can learn from that. I certainly loved the second half and wish we could package that."
Eleven of Southeastern's 14 turnovers came in the first half and the Golden Eagles took advantage by picking up 11 points off those early miscues. Tech shot 62.5 percent from the floor (20-of-32) prior to halftime, including hitting 3-of-7 (42.9 percent) from three-point range.
The Lions clamped down defensively in the second half and their shots started to fall. Narrowing the deficit to nine at the 15:02 mark on a jumper from
DeVonte Upson, Tech would push temporarily push its lead back into double digits.
Cedric Jenkins, a senior from LaPlace, Louisiana, hit from beyond the arc with 13:50 remaining and Southeastern went on a run, outscoring the Golden Eagles 36-7 to finish out the contest.
Hitting 20-of-31 overall (64.5 percent) in the second half, including 7-of-15 from from the outside, the Lions turned in one of their most dominant halves of basketball in recent history. Tech shot a meager 20 percent from the floor (6-of-30) to close out the game's final half.
Filmore led all players in scoring. Hammond native
Zay Jackson also poured in a career high, throwing in 25 points. Upson finished with his third double-double of the season, adding 14 points and 10 rebounds. Jenkins added nine points, while junior
Daniel Grieves scored eight and hauled in nine rebounds.
Tech entered the game ranked 25th in the nation with an average of 45 rebounds per contest. The Lions out-rebounded their opponent, 37-33.
For the game, Southeastern shot over 51 percent (29-of-56) from the floor and sank 11 three-pointers (in 26 attempts, 42.3 percent). The Golden Eagles finished shooting 41.9 percent overall (26-of-62) and was just 4-of-15 (26.7 percent) from beyond the arc.
Charles Jackson's double-double (17 points, 11 rebounds) led Tech. Torrane Rowe and Josiah Moore both reached double-digit points, scoring 13 and 12 respectively.
Southeastern travels to Tulane for a pair of games, after Thanksgiving, that are part of the Tulane Tournament. The Lions face the Green Wave, Friday at 7 p.m., in a game that will be carried on ESPN3, and then wrap up their tournament appearance Sunday at 11 a.m. against Langston. Both games will be played at Devlin Fieldhouse in New Orleans, Louisiana.
