No. 9 Southeastern-Lamar Game Day Central

Lions head to Beaumont on Saturday at 6 p.m. in search of 3-0 Southland start

Southeastern Game Notes / Lamar Game Notes

HAMMOND, La. – The No. 9 Southeastern Louisiana football team will look for its third straight 3-0 start to Southland Conference play when it heads to Lamar for a 6 p.m. league contest in Provost Umphrey Stadium.

A live video stream of the game between the Lions (4-2, 2-0 Southland) and the host Cardinals (4-2, 1-1 Southland), provided by LU, will be available for free at BigRedSN.com. The contest will be broadcast live in the Hammond area on the flagship station of Southeastern Football, KSLU-FM (90.9), as well as affiliates and Northshore Broadcasting stations Kajun 107.1 FM (WHMD) and The Highway 104.7 FM (WJSH), along with LionSports.net.

Southeastern extended its winning streak over Southland Conference competition to 12 games last Saturday with a 30-22 victory over Northwestern State. SLU defeated the Demons thanks to four interceptions and three blocked kicks.

Junior Denzel Thompson had two of those picks, earning Southland Conference and Louisiana Sports Writers Association Defensive Player of the Week honors. Senior kicker Ryan Adams was honored by College Football Performance Awards, the Southland and LSWA after kicking a school record 55-yard field goal. The defensive and special teams helped pick up a Lion offense that was held to 235 total yards and allowed the Lions to hold off a NSU rally from a 30-8 fourth-quarter deficit.

"We faced a very good football team in Northwestern State and it won't get easier when we go to Lamar on Saturday," Southeastern head coach Ron Roberts said. "We're getting everyone's best shot, so we in turn have to execute on our end and continue to raise our level of play."

Southeastern enters the game averaging 424.3 yards and 36.8 points per contest. Senior quarterback and Walter Payton Award candidate Bryan Bennett has thrown for 1,263 yards and nine touchdowns. Senior Devante Scott (21 catches, 436 yards, three touchdowns), junior Jeff Smiley (17-226-2 TD) and junior Xavier Roberson (15-177) are Bennett's top targets, while senior Jeremy Meyers has two touchdown catches.

Bennett also leads the team with 307 yards and six touchdowns rushing. Junior Kody Sutton (248 yards, two touchdowns), junior Rasheed Harrell (188-1 TD), Roberson (187-1 TD) and freshman Eugene Bethea (130-2 TD) bolster a SLU rushing attack that averages 203.3 yards per game.

The Lions will be matching up with a Lamar defense that is allowing 345.5 yards and 28.8 points per outing. Sophomore Xavier Bethany (48 tackles), junior Ronnie Jones (47 tackles) and senior Anthony Beard (40 tackles) are the team's top playmakers. Beard also leads the team with 6.5 tackles for loss, while senior Joe Okafor has a team-high 4.5 sacks. Bethany, junior Seth Ellis, senior Kevin Johnson and Ronald Barrett have one interception apiece.

On the offensive side of the ball, the Cards average 466.5 yards and 34.5 points per contest. Senior quarterback Caleb Berry runs the show and has thrown for 1,593 yards and 13 touchdowns thus far this season. Junior Reggie Begelton (29 catches, 354 yards, 3 TD), junior Devonn Brown (23-277-2 TD) and senior Mark Roberts (19-452-5 TD) are the top receivers for LU. Junior Carl Harris (468 yards, 4 TD) and sophomore Kade Harrington (250-2 TD) form a potent 1-2 punch in the LU backfield.

Berry and company will be facing a Lion defense that has allowed 303.7 yards and 17.5 yards per game through the first six contests. Senior Tyler Stoddard leads the team with 46 tackles, followed by the senior linebacker trio of Drew Misita (41 tackles), Isiah Corbett (39 tackles) and Kaleb Muse (31 tackles). Corbett leads the team with six tackles for loss, while Misita has a team-high three sacks.

The Lions have also forced 15 turnovers. Corbett also tops the team with three interceptions, followed by two by Thompson. Stoddard, Misita, senior Marice Sutton, junior Jordan Batiste, sophomore Derrick Raymond and freshman Ryan Sigers have one interception each. Thompson has forced a team-high two fumbles, while junior Micah Eugene leads the team with two fumble recoveries.

The Southeastern special teams continues to be a strength under Roberts. Roberson does not have enough kickoff returns to be listed among the Southland leaders, but leads FCS with 36.1 yards per return on nine attempts. Adams has been near perfect, hitting 9-of-10 field goal attempts and all but one of 26 PAT tries. The Dayton, Ohio native is one of three kickers in the nation with multiple 50-yard-plus field goals this season.

Following Saturday's contest, Southeastern will return home to host Central Arkansas for Homecoming on Saturday, Oct. 18 in Strawberry Stadium. LionVision subscribers will be able to access a live video stream of the game at LionSports.net.
