Lady Lions Fall To Defending Conference Champ Central Arkansas

Powerful offense carries Sugar Bears past Southeastern

HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana volleyball team fought back after two rough sets Saturday, but eventually fell to defending Southland Conference champ Central Arkansas, 25-16, 25-17, 21-25, 25-23, at the University Center.

Southeastern (5-11, 2-2 Southland) did not have an early answer for the powerful Central Arkansas (10-7, 5-0 Southland) offense. The Sugar Bears hit a combined .366 in the first two sets, pulling away from Southeastern in the middle of both sets.

The Lady Lions, coming out of intermission, took an early lead in the third set and never trailed. Southeastern led by as many as seven points late, 22-15. Three of the Lady Lions' seven total blocks came in the third set.

Southeastern rallied multiple times in a tight fourth set, holding a 23-22 lead, but Central Arkansas scored the final three points to take the match.

Landry Bullock (12 kills), Parrie Hartley (seven kills, .469 attack percentage) Tiffany Thomas (seven kills) and Mikayla Shippy (30 assists) led the Southeastern offense. Thomas also had a hand in five of the Lady Lions' blocks. Brooke Balser (15), Morgan Todd (15) and Hartley (11) all reached double-digit digs.

Evie Singleton (24 kills, .319 attack percentage, 10 digs) led all players in kills, recording a double-double in the process. Heather Schnars, the reigning conference offensive player of the week, added another 20 kills for the Sugar Bears. Kristine Hjembo dished out 48 assists. Shelbee Berringer led all players in digs with 27.

Southeastern returns to action Tuesday at the University Center, hosting McNeese State (10-9, 1-3 Southland) at 7 p.m. in a conference match.
