Singh's Goal Sends SLU to 3-2 Overtime Win at NSU

Lady Lions improve to 12-4 overall and 5-3 in Southland play

NATCHITOCHES, La. – Southeastern Louisiana sophomore forward Bri Singh scored the game-winning goal in the second minute of overtime to give the Lady Lion soccer team to a 3-2 victory over Northwestern State in Southland Conference action Sunday afternoon at the Demon Soccer Complex.

SLU improved to 12-4 overall and 5-3 in Southland Conference play. The host Lady Demons (4-12-1, 1-7-1) dropped the decision despite two goals by Cassandra Briscoe.

Singh, junior Cheyenne Maxwell and junior Gisenia Utreras each scored goals for Southeastern. Maxwell and senior Jen Babcock were each credited with assists.

Singh's season totals for goals (13, 6th) and points (29, 8th) both rank among the top single-season performances in school history. The Lancaster, California native has 22 career goals and is tied with former SLU players Karly Dagys and Ashley Strine for eighth on the school's career list.

Southeastern sophomore goalkeeper Casey Jeanfreau finished with seven saves for the Lady Lions. SLU is 3-3 since Jeanfreau took over for injured starting goalkeeper Hope Sabadash, the reigning Southland Freshman of the Year and Southland Tournament MVP

"We had to work hard to generate a positive result today," Southeastern head coach Blake Hornbuckle said. "Northwestern State played very well and was very organized, so we're pleased that we were able to persevere and come out with a victory.

"Cheyenne was excellent in the midfield today, scoring our first goal and playing Bri for the game-winner," Hornbuckle added. "Bri was again a handful to deal with up top and showed great composure to score the game-winner early in overtime. We continue to be pleased with the efforts of Chelsea Villaescusa and her ability to defend players 1-v-1."

The Lady Lions jumped out to a 1-0 lead midway through the first half. Maxwell deposited a feed from Babcock into the left corner of the net to give SLU the early advantage.

Northwestern State evened the match in the 66th minute. Briscoe was awarded a penalty kick and sent it past Southeastern sophomore Casey Jeanfreau to knot the score at 1-1.

Southeastern answered with just under 10 minutes left in regulation. Utreras earned a penalty kick try and the Brampton, Ontario, Canada native's fourth goal of the season put the Lady Lions up, 2-1.

NSU would not go away, however, as Briscoe finished a pass from Cache Haley to tie the score with just over four minutes left in regulation to force overtime.

Southeastern put the match away less than 90 seconds into overtime. Maxwell played Singh, whose shot sailed off the hands of NSU goalkeeper Alex Latham into the net.

The Lady Lions will return home to host Sam Houston State on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Southeastern Soccer Complex. Sunday will also be Senior Day, as Babcock and Villaescusa will be honored prior to the match.
