Lions Rain Down Threes On Lamar

Southeastern hits 16 treys, one shy of school record

Box Score

HAMMOND, La. – A big game from three-point range paced the Southeastern Louisiana men's basketball team to a 91-65 Southland Conference victory Saturday over Lamar at the University Center.

Southeastern (8-9, 3-3 Southland) hit on 16 three-point attempts, one shy of the school's single-game record. Converting 16-of-27 (59.3 percent) from beyond the arc the Lions built a sizable and comfortable lead over Lamar (1-17, 0-6 Southland).

JaMichael Hawkins led the way for Southeastern, dropping in six three-pointers and 25 points overall to lead four Lions in double-digit scoring.

"Around the 10-minute mark, it was 20-15 or so, we were starting to pull away and they went to the zone," head coach Jim Yarbrough said. "JaMichael Hawkins is like the Death Star against zones. He was absolutely terrific."

The defensive change coincided with a 20-3 Southeastern first-half run, breaking open a tight game to build a 35-18 lead. The Lions led by 20 at the half and stretched it to 27 late in the second half.

Onochie Ochie (13), Dre Evans (11) and Joshua Filmore (11) all scored double-digit points for the Lions. Antonnio Benton chipped in nine points and grabbed a game-high eight rebounds.

Evans (five assists) and Filmore (seven assists) enjoyed a good day distributing the ball as Southeastern hit 34-of-60 (56.7 percent) from the floor.

Former Lion forward Donovan Ross led Lamar with 15 points and eight rebounds. Amos Wilson (14), Nimrod Hilliard and Rhon Mitchell (12) also turned in double-digit offensive performances for the Cardinals.

Southeastern plays four of its next five contests on the road, returning home, Jan. 30, to face the UNO Privateers.
