Lions Clinch Spot In Southland Tournament With Win Over UCA

Southeastern wraps up one-run victory for second-straight game

CONWAY, Ark. – Southeastern Louisiana University clinched a spot in the 2013 Southland Conference Baseball Tournament with a 7-6 win Saturday at Central Arkansas.

Aaron Haag gave the Lions an early lead with a second-inning, solo home run, his third of the season, but the Central Arkansas (31-13, 10-10 Southland) responded with a three-run homer in the bottom of the inning.

Southeastern (30-17, 13-7 Southland) regained the lead in the fourth, chasing Bear starter Jeffrey Enloe (7-4) with four runs. The Lions tacked on a pair of important insurance runs in the seventh off reliever Clint Green.

Central Arkansas rallied for three runs in the eighth to make it a one run game, but freshman Mason Klotz shut down the Bear offense to preserve the victory. Southeastern won has now won at least 30 games in each of the last seven seasons under head coach Jay Artigues.

Four Lions, including Jameson Fisher, Ben Hernandez, Ladd Rhodes and Harry Slade, recorded multi-hit games. Every Southeastern starter except one hit safely.

Tate Scioneaux (6-1) earned the win while Klotz earned his seventh save of the season, tossing the final 1.2 innings. Enloe, a native of Gonzales, La., suffered the loss.

With the tie-breaker over Nicholls State, the Lions clinched their spot in the tournament, May 22-25 in Sugar Land, Texas, with the win and the Colonels loss at Sam Houston State. SLU, in sole possession of second place, is one game behind Sam Houston in the standings with seven game left in conference play. The Bearkats come to Hammond, May 10-12, for a three-game series.

Southeastern will send senior right-hander Kaleb Manuel (3-3, 4.59) to the mound Sunday for the 1 p.m. series finale. Central Arkansas will counter with junior right-hander Bryce Biggerstaff (3-2, 3.18).
