HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University baseball team split a Mother's Day doubleheader Sunday with No. 28-ranked Sam Houston State, winning the finale, 5-1, after dropping the opener, 4-0.

Southeastern (31-21, 14-10 Southland) is in a four-way tie for third in the Southland Conference, three games behind the first-place Bearkats (33-18, 17-7 Southland) and one behind Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.

Sam Houston shut out the Lions in the first game behind the complete-game pitching of left-hander Caleb Smith (7-4). He allowed three hits and walked one, striking out three. Tate Scioneaux (6-2) was the tough-luck loser, working six innings. Kyle Cedotal and Kyle Keller combined to toss three scoreless innings in relief of Scioneaux.

In the second game, Southeastern scored all the runs it needed in the first and senior right-hander Kaleb Manuel (4-4) tossed a complete game for the win on Senior Day at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field. The win snapped Sam Houston's 11-game winning streak and stopped a season-high, four-game skid by the Lions.

Southeastern wraps up the regular season with a three-game, Southland Conference series  Thursday through Saturday at McNeese State.

GAME 1
The Bearkats scored the only run they would need in the first. Jessie Plumlee led off the game with a single to left. After a pair of fly outs, Plumlee scored from first on Kevin Miller's two-out double off the left-field wall.

Scioneaux kept the Lions within one into the fifth, but Sam Houston State loaded the bases with no outs before Anthony Azar doubled into the left-center field gap to clear the bases. Following the double, Scioneaux got a fly out and a pair of strikeouts to end the inning.

Southeastern managed hits in the third (Aaron Haag), seventh (Jameson Fisher) and ninth (Ben Hernandez) off of Smith, but the Bearkats turned a pair of double plays in the game to aide the southpaw.

GAME 2
The Lions came out swinging the bats in the final home game of the season. After Sam Houston starter Andrew Godail (5-3) hit Hernandez with one out, Fisher dropped a single into left. A wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position, Sam Roberson singled up the middle, driving in both Hernandez and Fisher, and then took second on the throw to the plate. Another wild pitch by Godail moved Roberson to third and he scored on a ground out by Harry Slade.

With the lead, Manuel went right after the Bearkat hitters. He fanned four batters in the first five innings and did not walk a batter in the game, his second complete game of the season.

Southeastern padded the lead in the third with an unearned run. Ladd Rhodes drew a leadoff walk and was sacrificed to second by Hernandez. After passed ball moved him to third, Fisher drew a walk to put runners on the corners. Rhodes scored on the back-side of a double-steal attempt that caught Fisher at second.

Sam Houston's lone run came on Anthony Azar's fifth home run of the season, a solo shot leading off the fourth.

Slade scored the Lions final run, scoring on a double play in the fourth off reliever Logan Boyd. Godail, the first of three southpaws used in the game by the Bearkats, suffered the loss.
