Box Score 2 HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University baseball team split a doubleheader Saturday with Texas A&M-Corpus Christi to win the three-game Southland Conference series over the Islanders.
Southeastern (28-17, 11-7 Southland) won the second game, 5-4, after dropping the first game of the day to A&M-Corpus Christi (24-19, 10-8 Southland), 8-5.
With a 5-2 win in Friday's series opener, the Lions won a series for the first time since sweeping Nicholls State, March 28-30. Southeastern had dropped three-consecutive conference series for the first time since 2008.
The Lions return to action Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at Tulane.
First Game: AMCC 8 – SLU 5
A&M-Corpus Christi scored two runs in the first inning and three more in the third as the Islanders built up an early 5-1 lead.
Southeastern struggled to solve left-hander Trevor Belicek (7-1). The sophomore retired the first eight batters he faced before
Alex Marse's two-out single in the third.
Kyle Cedotal and
Ben Hernandez each followed with singles to bring home Marse with the Lions' first run.
Trailing 8-2 entering the ninth, the Lions made a run at A&M-Corpus Christi. Four of the first five batters singled to chase Belicek. Hernandez and
Jameson Fisher hit safely. After
Sam Roberson flied out to the warning track in left-center field,
Harry Slade knocked in Hernandez.
Jesse Buratt singled to load the bases and the Islanders brought in left-hander Seth Horton.
After
Ladd Rhodes popped out to shortstop,
Aaron Haag drove in Fisher and Slade with a single to right. Horton then hit
Alex Marse with a pitch forcing the Islanders back to the pen for Jacob Dorris. The right-hander retired Cedotal to close out the game and earn his conference-leading ninth save of the season.
Belicek earned the win while Southeastern starter
Tate Scioneaux (5-1) suffered his first loss of the season.
Second Game: SLU 5 – AMCC 4
The offensive nature of the first game carried over into the nightcap, as neither starter recorded an out in the second inning.
A&M-Corpus Christi scored four unearned runs in the first to chase Lion starter
Jordan Hymel after two-thirds of an inning. Reliever
Kaleb Manuel (3-3) came on to quell the Islander bats and tossed six scoreless innings to earn the victory.
Southeastern exploded for all five of its runs in the second. Islander starter Matt Danton hit Buratt with a pitch to open the inning. Rhodes and Haag each followed with singles, Buratt scoring on Haag's, to chase Danton.
Marse greeted reliever, and losing pitcher, O'Shea Dumes (1-1) with a hit-and-run single to right to drive in Rhodes. A sacrifice drag-bunt by Cedotal scored Haag. Hernandez singled up the middle to drive in Marse. An errant pickoff attempt at first allowed Hernandez to take a pair of bases and then he scored on Fisher's grounder to second.
After the second inning, both bullpens locked down the game.
Mason Klotz pitched the final 2.1 innings for Southeastern to earn the save.
