Box Score NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Southeastern Louisiana University baseball team scored a pair of first-inning runs on a suicide squeeze as the Lions hit and ran their way to a 7-3 Southland Conference win Saturday at Stephen F. Austin.
Southeastern (26-14, 9-5 Southland) also regained a share of first place in the conference by knocking off SFA (20-18, 9-5 Southland) to even the series at one game apiece.
With a pair of runners in scoring position and one out in the first,
Sam Roberson pushed a bunt back to the mound.
Jesse Buratt, breaking for the plate on the pitch, scored easily.
Jameson Fisher rounded third and continued to the plate as Lumberjack pitcher Kyle Cross hesitated on his throw. Cross' throw home was wild, allowing Fisher to score on the play as well and Roberson to wind up at second.
The Lumberjacks cut the lead in half an inning later. First baseman Max Lamantia doubled with two out and scored on Jordan Camel's single to left.
Southeastern added single runs in the fourth and fifth.
Ladd Rhodes led off the fourth with a triple into the right-center field gap and scored on
Kyle Cedotal's ground out. Fisher led off the fifth with a double to right. Roberson reached on an infield single and then the Lions executed a double steal. After an SFA pitching change, Rhodes plated Fisher on an error by second baseman Freddy Villalobos.
SFA cut the Lion lead to one in the sixth as left fielder Ricardo Sanchez homered to right, driving in Villalobos.
With a single run in the seventh and two more in the eighth, Southeastern padded its lead.
Fisher and Roberson each stole a pair of bases in the game. Fisher finished with three hits while Buratt and
Alex Marse each recorded a pair of base knocks.
The Lions picked up 12 hits in the game, the first time they have recorded double-digit hits in conference play since the opener of the Nicholls State series (March 28).
Tate Scioneaux (5-0) picked up the win for Southeastern and Cross (4-4), the Lumberjack starter, suffered the loss.
Sunday, Southeastern will throw senior right-hander
Kaleb Manuel (2-2, 4.67) in the 1 p.m. finale while SFA will counter with senior right-hander Justin Choate (2-2, 4.98).
The game can be heard in the Hammond area on KSLU-FM (90.9), on the internet through the Southeastern athletics website, as well as on the KSLU iPhone and TuneIn Radio apps.
