Box Score NATCHITOCHES, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University baseball team scored early against Northwestern State and used strong pitching to close out a 3-2 win Sunday for a series sweep at Brown-Stroud Field.
Senior left-hander
Jordan Hymel (3-2) earned the 20th win of his career, tying Wade Miley,Wayne Silva and Richard Simon for sixth on Southeastern's all-time wins list.
Dylan Hills pitched the final three innings to pick up his sixth save of the season.
Southeastern (18-7, 3-0 Southland) picked up a pair of runs in the third inning.
Sam Roberson led off the inning with a single to right and moved up to second on
Alex Marse's single to left.
Ben Hernandez drew a two-out walk off Demon left-hander Joey Parrack (0-4) to load the bases and
Harry Slade followed with a single up the middle. Roberson and Marse scored to give the Lions the lead.
In the fifth, Marse drew a lead-off walk and was sacrificed to second. Northwestern State (9-17, 0-3 Southland) went to the bullpen for right-hander Steven Spann. Hernandez drew a walk before Slade hit a chopper to the shortstop.
Hernandez was erased at second on the fielder's choice, but a wild relay to first allowed Marse to score from third.
Hymel worked six innings, allowing a run on three hits, before yielding to Hills.
Northwestern State scored single runs in the sixth and seventh. The Demons put the potential tying run at second with one out in the ninth, but Hills induced a groundout to third and fanned shortstop Matt Burns to end the game.
Southeastern returns to action at 6 p.m. Tuesday against Louisiana-Lafayette at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.
