HAMMOND – The Southeastern Louisiana football team closed out its first week of spring practice with a two-hour workout on a cold Saturday afternoon at Strawberry Stadium.
The practice was the second this spring in full pads for the Lions. In all, the first week saw Southeastern put in its first four workouts in preparation for the Aug. 29 season opener versus Southeast Missouri.
The practice closed with an extended round of team drills. Defensively, linebacker
Kaleb Muse highlighted the session with an interception off a tipped pass. Defensive backs
Theo Alexander,
Marice Sutton and
Devante Davis also laid in hard hits to break up passes from the Lion quarterbacks.
On the offensive side, quarterback
Bryan Bennett hooked up with
Jeff Smiley on a nice throw up the middle. Running backs
Kody Sutton and
Jonathan Hill also made several productive runs during the final session of practice.
Southeastern second-year head coach
Ron Roberts has been pleased what he's seen early this spring from his squad.
“I think our tempo and attitude have been good during this first week,” Roberts commented. “We're working hard and we played physical the last two days. It's early in the spring and we're still making some mistakes, but the effort has been there.”
Southeastern will be back to work on Tuesday with a 3:30 p.m. practice. The Aug. 29 season opener will be the first of six home games played in Strawberry Stadium. Season tickets are on sale now and can be purchased from the Southeastern Athletics Ticket Office at (985) 549-5466 or LionSports.net.
