ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Southeastern Louisiana University basketball team makes its second appearance in the Ramada Worldwide BracketBusters when it visits Big South Conference member Winthrop on Saturday at Winthrop Coliseum.
Tipoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. CST. The game can be heard in the Hammond area on KSLU-FM (90.9), on the internet at www.LionSports.net, the KSLU iPhone app and TuneIn Radio.
Southeastern (10-14) made its debut last season in the BracketBusters defeating Ohio Valley Conference foe UT Martin, 64-48, in the University Center. The Lions' matchup against Winthrop (11-15) will mark the first meeting between the schools on the hardwood with the Eagles slated to return the trip to Hammond in either the 2013-14 or 2014-15 seasons.
The Lions are led in scoring by senior
Brandon Fortenberry at 14.3 points per game followed by senior
Roosevelt Johnson at 10.9.
Dre Evans (8.8),
Jeffery Ricard (8.8),
Onochie Ochie (5.6),
Antonnio Benton (5.3) and
Todd Nelson (5.0) are next in scoring for Southeastern, which averages 62.4 points per game.
Johnson, who passed former Lion and current Harlem Globetrotter Nate Lofton for 10th place on the school's all-time rebounding list with 571, has pulled down 8.5 rebounds per game this season to lead the Lions followed by Fortenberry (4.7), Benton (4.0),
Roger Woods (3.8) and
Jan Petrovcic (3.0).
Winthrop, under first-year coach Pat Kelsey, looks to rebound after losing four of its past five games while losing starters Derrick Henry (the team's leading scorer) and Larry Brown (the team's top rebounder) for the season to injuries. The Eagles, who are 3-4 all-time in BracketBuster games, are led in scoring by Gideon Gamble with 9.8 points per game with Joab Jerome averaging 9.3.
Jerome, who averages 4.8 rebounds per game, has averaged 15.0 points per game in his last four games highlighted by a career-high 20-point effort against Presbyterian College on Feb. 16.
Andre Smith (9.0), James Bourne (6.0) and Christian Farmer (5.5) are next in scoring for the Eagles, who average 60.1 points overall and are 9-4 at home.
Southeastern is 1-6 all-time against current members of the Big South Conference with the Lions facing Campbell (1-4), Coastal Carolina (0-1) and Liberty (0-1). Southeastern and Campbell were former league rivals from 1994-97 in the Trans America Athletic Conference (now the Atlantic Sun).
The game will mark a return to the Palmetto State for Southeastern head coach Jim Yarbrough, who served as an assistant coach at the College of Charleston from 1994-2000. From 1994-1996, Yarbrough and former Winthrop coach Gregg Marshall (now head coach at Wichita State) were assistants at CofC under John Kresse.
