Box Score HAMMOND, La. – Catcher
Sam Roberson's fourth-inning steal of home highlighted the Lions' pressure-packed offensive attack Sunday in Southeastern Louisiana's 9-3 win over Tennessee-Martin.
Southeastern (3-0) completed the season-opening sweep of the Skyhawks behind the solid pitching of freshman
Tate Scioneaux as well as the bats of
Corey Bryan,
Ben Hernandez and
Harry Slade.
Scioneaux (1-0) became the third-consecutive freshman pitcher to earn a win for the Lions in 2013, tossing six innings of five-hit ball. The right-hander from Reserve, La., struck out six in his collegiate debut.
The trio of Bryan, Hernandez and Slade each produced a pair of hits as the Lions downed UT-Martin (0-3) for the eighth-consecutive time in the series.
Trailing 2-0, Southeastern sent nine batters to the plate in a five-run third.
Ladd Rhodes reached on a fielding error by the shortstop and went to third on Roberson's double to left. Hernandez picked up his first hit, a two-run double, and advanced to third on Bryan's single. Third baseman
Jesse Buratt plated Hernandez on a sacrifice fly to left.
Slade singled, taking an extra bag as the throw followed Bryan to third.
Aaron Haag drove in Bryan with a sac fly to center and Slade scored on a single by freshman
Jameson Fisher.
In the fourth, Roberson reached on a fielder's choice and was sacrificed to second by Hernandez. UT-Martin starter Alex Boshers (0-1) balked, for the second time in as many innings, sending Roberson to third and setting up the Lions' second steal of home in the series.
Sensing Boshers was rattled, Roberson broke for home and slid around the tag to give Southeastern a 6-2 lead. Fisher stole home in game two of the series to score the Lions' first run.
The Skyhawks added a run in the sixth after breaking up a string of 10-consecutive batters retired by Scioneaux.
Finishing out the scoring the Lions added a pair in the seventh and a single run in the eighth.
For the fourth time in
Jay Artigues' eight seasons, Southeastern sweeps the season-opening series and the third time in the last four. The Lions swept Eastern Illinois (2010) and Indiana (2012), but took two of three at Florida International to open the 2011 season.
Southeastern returns to action Tuesday at Tulane. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium in New Orleans, La.
