HAMMOND – After claiming sole possession of the Southland Conference lead, the Southeastern Louisiana football team made the nation's biggest rise in the national polls that were released on Monday.
The Lions, who made their first appearance in the national polls since 2004 last week, were ranked No. 25 in the previous Sports Network and Football Championship Subdivision Coaches polls. But, after its 41-7 road win at then-No. 4/7 McNeese State in a battle of league co-leaders, Southeastern has climbed to No. 16 in the Sports Network Top 25 and is ranked 17th in the FCS Coaches poll.
Southeastern jumped out to a 20-0 lead over the Cowboys last Saturday and never looked back. The Lions racked up 439 total yards – including 284 rushing yards in the victory, while holding McNeese State, which came in ranked 12
th nationally in total offense to just 191 yards and 13 first downs.
The Lions are one of four Southland Conference teams represented in the polls. Sam Houston State is currently sixth in the Sports Network poll, while sitting in seventh in the FCS Coaches Poll. The Cowboys dropped to No. 11 (TSN) and No. 13 (Coaches) in the polls. Central Arkansas fell out of the Sports Network top 25, but is 24
th in the Coaches poll.
The No. 16/17 Lions will look to extend their six-game win streak and remain alone atop the Southland standings when it faces No. 24 UCA on Saturday at 7 p.m. in Conway, Ark. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN3. The game will also air on KSLU 90.9 FM, the flagship station of the Southeastern Sports Radio Network, as well as Northshore Broadcasting stations Kajun 107.1 FM and The Joint 104.7 FM.
