Lion Hoops Hosts Western Illinois In Midweek Tilt

Contest part of women's/men's doubleheader

HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana men's basketball squad hosts Western Illinois Tuesday as a part of a doubleheader with the Lady Lion basketball team. The Lady Lions host William Carey at 5 p.m. in an exhibition game and the men will square off against the Leathernecks at 7:30 p.m.

Tickets for the contest can be purchased at www.LionSports.net or by calling the Southeastern Athletics Ticket Office at (985) 549-LION. The game can be heard in the Hammond area on KSLU 90.9 FM, online or via the TuneIn Radio smartphone app. Fans can watch the contest live on LionVision, Southeastern's subscription-based video stream, or follow live statistics.

Links for tickets, audio, stats and video are available on the basketball schedule page at www.LionSports.net.

"This will be like playing a Sam Houston/Stephen F. Austin-type team," coach Jim Yarbrough said. "It'll be a great defense, low scoring, grind it out kind of game. I want us to be ready for that. I want us to be able to respond and hold serve at home. We've got to win at home every single time, that's got to be our goal."

Part of a series that will see the Lions return the trip to WIU next season, the two schools face each other for the first time since the Leathernecks defeated Southeastern, 75-61, on Feb. 4, 1980.

JaMichael Hawkins continues to lead the Southeastern offense, scoring an average of 14.3 points per game. Devonte Upson, a transfer from Trinidad State JC, is the Lions' top man on the boards (7.3 rebounds per game). Dre Evans is handing out 4.8 assists per contest while Antonnio Benton, Julian Chiera and Joshua Filmore are all averaging a steal each time out.

Southeastern is coming off an 89-66 loss at LSU this past Friday while WIU picked up its first win of the season, 79-52 over Eureka, the day prior.

Garrett Covington leads the Leathernecks in scoring with 12.5 ppg. Adam Link, whose 9.0 ppg scoring average is third-best on the team, leads the squad in rebounding (6.0 rpg), assists (3.3) and steals (1.8).

Following the contest, Southeastern hits the road for back-to-back contests at North Texas (Nov. 30) and at Arkansas (Dec. 3) before returning home to host Southeast Missouri State, Dec. 7, at the University Center.
