Southeastern's Corbett Earns CFPA National Weekly Honors

Junior named nation's top linebacker after win over No. 4 SHSU

HAMMOND – After helping No. 14 Southeastern Louisiana to a 34-21 victory over No. 4 Sam Houston State, Lion junior linebacker Isiah Corbett was named the FCS National Linebacker of the Week by College Football Performance Awards, CFPA announced on Sunday.

Corbett, a Belle Glade, Fla. native, is the fourth Lion of the season to be honored with national weekly honors by the CFPA. Sophomore Xavier Roberson was twice named the National Kick Returner of the Week (Oct. 20 and Nov. 10). After Southeastern's 56-14 win over Stephen F. Austin on Oct. 12, junior quarterback Bryan Bennett (National Performer of the Week, National Quarterback of the Week) and junior defensive back Marice Sutton (National Defensive Back of the Week) were honored.

Corbett's play was key to the Lions' eighth straight victory, which allowed Southeastern secure its first FCS playoff berth in school history and at least a share of the Southland Conference championship. He finished with six tackles, including five for loss and two sacks. He also had the biggest play of the game, intercepting SHSU quarterback Bryan Bell deep in Lion territory and returned it 61 yards on the first play of the fourth quarter and set up a Southeastern field goal.

Corbett and fellow junior newcomer Jacob Newman have provided Southeastern with its best pass rush tandem in recent years. Corbett and Newman share the team lead with 13.5 tackles for loss, while Corbett's nine sacks lead the team.

Corbett and the Lions (9-2, 6-0 Southland) will be looking to set a new school record for single-season victories and take sole possession of the 2013 Southland championship on Thursday. Southeastern hosts Nicholls State at 6 p.m. in Strawberry Stadium. The game will be televised on tape delay by WHNO (Charter Channel 14 in the Hammond area) and streamed live on ESPN3. The game will also air on KSLU 90.9 FM, the flagship station of the Southeastern Sports Radio Network, as well as Northshore Broadcasting stations Kajun 107.1 FM and The Joint 104.7 FM. Fans can listen online at www.LionSports.net or on their smart phone using the TuneIn Radio app.
