Lady Lions Fall In Four At Nicholls State

Southeastern returns home Thursday for Dig the Lions

THIBODAUX, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana volleyball team took the first set Tuesday at Nicholls State, but multiple comebacks over the course of a wild Southland Conference match fell short in four sets, 29-27, 21-25, 16-25, 26-28.

With a strong defensive effort, Southeastern (6-12, 0-6 Southland) fought off a pesky Colonels squad in the first set. The Lady Lions held Nicholls (5-12, 2-5 Southland) to a .157 attack percentage in the set and posted a pair of team blocks.

Featuring 12 tie scores and eight lead changes, the first set was also Southeastern's best offensive  effort of the match (.174 attack percentage). Veronica Turk and Rachael Bunn each posted four kills while Mikayla Shippy dished out 12 assists in the set.

Over the next three sets Nicholls fought off numerous Lady Lion surges, including another tight set in the fourth that contained 10 ties and seven lead changes.

Tiffany Thomas and Veronica Turk led Southeastern with nine kills apiece. Landry Bullock chipped in eight and Rachael Bunn added seven kills. Setter Mikayla Shippy handed out 34 assists, recording a double-double with 11 digs. Four Lady Lions posted double-digit digs, including Morgan Todd (18), Megan McMillin (11) and Brooke Balser (10).

Southeastern recorded 11 team blocks with Turk (five total blocks), Bunn (four tb), Shippy (four tb) and Thomas (4 tb) playing an integral role up front.

Kayla Mashburn (22 kills, 10 digs), Kayla Burling (15 kills, 12 digs) and Marlee Bean (21 assists, 13 digs) all posted double-doubles for the Colonels. Alyse Barclay handed out 25 assists to aide the offense while Kalynn Egea led all defenders with 23 digs for Nicholls.

Southeastern returns home Thursday to face Houston Baptist (7-11, 2-4 Southland) for Dig the Lions. The 7 p.m. contest will feature free food, while it lasts, for students as well as T-shirts for the first 300 students in attendance.
