Southeastern is 4-4 all-time in Southland openers and is anxious to start league play with a victory for the second time in as many years under head coach
Ron Roberts.
"We have to build on the positive things we were able to do in our first five games and continue to improve," Southeastern head coach
Ron Roberts said. "We're facing a dangerous team with an explosive offense in Stephen F. Austin, so we have to concentrate on limiting their big play opportunities and executing what we do on both sides of the ball.
"We were thankful to the fans for the great atmosphere they provided in Strawberry Stadium (in last weekend's 35-3 win over Incarnate Word)," Roberts added. "We need that same kind of energy this week and we expect to have one of the largest student turnouts in school history."
The Lions were able to rack up 463 total yards in the win over future league member UIW. Junior quarterback
Bryan Bennett threw for 267 yards and two touchdowns on 19 of 30 passes with sophomore
Jeff Smiley (seven catches, 91 yards, 1 TD) serving as his favorite target. Sophomore
Rasheed Harrell put up 87 yards and a touchdown on only nine carries to lead the Lion rushing attack.
Southeastern was able to record five sacks in the win over the Cardinals, as junior
Isiah Corbett, junior
Justin Church, junior
Jacob Newman and senior
Cqulin Hubert were able to get UIW quarterback Trent Brittain down behind the line. Corbett was dominant, leading the Lions with nine tackles including three for a loss, while junior
Marice Sutton changed the game with a 67-yard interception return for a touchdown to close the first half.
The Lion offense had tremendous success on the ground in non-conference play, averaging 230.6 rushing yards per game. Bennett (320 yards, 6 TD), Harrell (259 yards, 2 TD), sophomore
Kody Sutton (241 yards, 3 TD) and sophomore
Xavier Roberson (213 yards, 2 TD) have all been effective on the ground for Southeastern.
Bennett is coming off his first multi-passing touchdown performance of his career and has thrown for 916 yards and three scores this season. Smiley has been his favorite target, leading the team with 21 catches, 274 receiving yards and two receiving touchdowns. Seniors
Tony McCrea (13 catches, 230 yards) and
Marquis Fruge' (11-115) have also been productive in the passing game.
The Lion defense has allowed 22.6 points and 382.4 yards per game through the first five games. Junior
Drew Misita and senior
John Graves share the team lead with 24 tackles. Newman and Corbett have been the team's top pass rushers with four sacks apiece, while Church and senior
Greg Triay have three sacks each.
Senior place kicker
Seth Sebastian will look to continue his perfect 2013, as the Lafayette native has made all six of his field goal tries and all 19 of his point after attempts. Senior punter
Matt McCormick is second in the Southland with a 42.6 yard average. Roberson leads the FCS with a 40.9 yard kick return average.
The Lion defense will be facing a prolific SFA offense that has had an extra week to prepare after putting up 827 yards in a 56-48 loss to Prairie View on Sept. 28. The 'Jacks enter Saturday's contest ranking No. 2 nationally in total offense (588.8 ypg) and featuring the nation's most productive passing offense (433.8 ypg).
Senior quarterback Brady Attaway has thrown for 1,917 yards and 12 touchdowns through the first five games. Attaway spreads the ball around to a variety of weapons, including senior Mike Brooks (36 catches, 517 yards, 5 TD), junior DJ Ward (34-487-4 TD), junior Tyler Boyd (29-215-1 TD) and sophomore Aaron Thomas (23-403-2 TD). Junior Gus Johnson gives SFA a dangerous running threat, averaging 112.6 rushing yards per contest and scoring seven touchdowns.
The SFA defense is allowing 43.6 points and 499.2 yards per game. Senior Ortavious Hypolite leads the team with 48 tackles. Junior Ishmiah Miles has a team-high five tackles for loss and two sacks, while senior Caleb Nelson has picked off two passes.
