HAMMOND – The Southeastern Louisiana University men's basketball team closes out a season-long three-game homestand on Saturday when it plays host to Southland Conference rival Central Arkansas at the University Center.
Tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. and will follow the Southeastern-UCA women's game that is scheduled at 2. Both games can be heard in the Hammond area on KSLU-FM (90.9) and on the internet at www.LionSports.net. Southeastern (2-9, 0-1 SLC) dropped its Southland Conference opener to league newcomer and preseason favorite Oral Roberts, 86-72, on Thursday. The Lions, who posted their second consecutive 25-for-57 (43.9 percent) performance from the floor, sank a season-high seven 3-pointers against the Golden Eagles while going 15-for-15 from the free throw line in their best performance from the charity stripe since going 11-for-11 against Florida International in the 1992-93 season.
Roosevelt Johnson scored a team-high 18 points for Southeastern with
Dre Evans adding 15 and
Brandon Fortenberry 14. Johnson, who went 6-for-6 from the free throw line, grabbed a team-high seven rebounds for the Lions while Evans dished out a game-high five assists.
Fortenberry leads Southeastern in scoring at 12.0 points per game with Johnson averaging 10.2 points along with a team-high 7.6 rebounds and 1.3 steals.
Jeffery Ricard is next in scoring for the Lions at 9.4 points with Evans (8.4),
Antonnio Benton (6.2),
Onochie Ochie (4.7) and
Todd Nelson (4.6) following.
UCA (5-6, 0-1 SLC) dropped its Southland opener on Thursday with an 83-79 loss at Nicholls State. Robert Crawford scored 21 points to lead three players in double figures for the Bears with Jarvis Garner adding 18 and Daouda Berete chipping in with 15.
The Bears shot 51 percent (29-for-57) from the floor against the Colonels, but went 7-for-23 (30.4 percent) from behind the 3-point line while committing 22 turnovers.
Garner leads UCA, which ranks second in the Southland Conference 80.2 points per game, in scoring at 16.1 points with Crawford (15.9), LaQuentin Miles (13.9) and Jordan Harks (11.1) averaging in double figures. Garner leads the Bears with 6.9 rebounds per game while Miles and Berete have dished out a team-high 27 assists.
