Ron Roberts announced Wednesday that defensive back and Baton Rouge native
Devante Davis has transferred from the University of North Texas and will play for the Lions in the 2013 season.
Davis, who will have three years of eligibility remaining, enrolled at Southeastern and attended the first day of classes on Tuesday. The former Woodlawn High product will participate in spring practice that begins on Feb. 25.
“Devante is a very athletic defensive back that we think can play at multiple positions in the secondary, especially in our scheme,” Roberts said. “He's not only a great cover guy, but he's physical and is a big playmaker. I think he's somebody who will have a lot to bring to the table for us defensively. He's a local guy, which always helps, and we're excited about having him back in the state of Louisiana.”
Davis played in five games as a true freshman for the Mean Green in 2012 where he totaled 13 tackles with 1.5 stops for loss. Davis recorded a season-high eight tackles against Houston and added four against Florida Atlantic.
Davis, who was rated as the No. 63 safety in the nation by ESPN.com coming out of high school, totaled 97 tackles with four pass breakups, three forced fumbles and a fumble recovery as a senior at WHS. He played in the U.S. Army Red Stick Bowl All-Star Game was and was named the Defensive MVP after recording an interception.
A two-time first-team All-District 5-5A selection, Davis recorded 85 tackles with eight pass breakups, five forced fumbles and a pair of interceptions as a junior for the Panthers.
