Box Score

HUNTSVILLE, Texas – Sam Houston State scored seven runs in the first two innings Sunday and the Bearkats hung on to defeat Southeastern Louisiana, 8-3.

SHSU (34-16, 22-8 Southland) clinched the Southland Conference regular-season title with the win, dropping Southeastern (34-18, 18-12 Southland) four games back. The  Lions hold a one-game lead over third-place Texas State with three games remaining in conference play.

The Bearkats chased Lion starter Buck Bernard (2-1) in the first inning. Colt Atwood, Luke Plucheck and Kevin Miller recorded three-consecutive hits to open the inning for a 2-0 lead. After a sacrifice bunt and a couple of hit batters the Lions brought in Kaleb Manuel to pitch. His wild pitch allowed Miller to score.

SHSU added four more runs in the second and a final run in the fifth.

Southeastern scored its three runs in the eighth inning. Brett Hoffman singled to lead off the inning. Ryan Downing pinch ran for Hoffman and moved to second on an errant pickoff throw by the pitcher. Alex Marse reached on an error by the third baseman and SHSU pulled its starting pitcher, Michael Oros (7-1).

Harry Slade greeted left-handed reliever Brandon Bergen with a deep fly out to right and Downing was able to move up to third. Ben Hernandez singled through the right side to drive in Downing and break up the shutout. After Brock Hebert walked to load the bases, Jonathan Pace singled to left driving in Marse and Hernandez.

The Lions left a pair of runners on in the ninth as they dropped the final two games of the series to SHSU.

Southeastern returns to action Thursday at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field in the opener of a three-game conference series with McNeese State. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
