Lions Split Doubleheader With First-Place Sam Houston State

HUNTSVILLE, Texas – Sam Houston State's Ryan O'Hearn singled to left with two outs in the ninth to drive in the winning run and the Bearkats defeated Southeastern Louisiana, 3-2, to split a doubleheader.

After retiring the first two hitters in the ninth, Jason Greenleaf walked a pair hitters before O'Hearn singled over the head of left fielder Ladd Rhodes.

Sam Houston State (33-16, 21-7 Southland) led 1-0 heading into the eight inning. Brock Hebert beat out an infield single and then stole second base. He moved to third on Jonathan Pace's groundout and scored on Cody Gougler's sacrifice fly to center.

O'Hearn put the Bearkats back on top with a solo home run to right leading off the bottom of the eighth.

Southeastern (34-17, 18-11 Southland) came right back in the ninth to tie the game again. Brett Hoffman drew a one-out walk and the Lions sent in Britt Gautreaux as a pinch runner. Alex Marse followed up with a single to right. With Harry Slade at the plate, the runners broke on a pitch in the dirt, but Gautreaux was throw out at third.

Slade then drove the ball over the head of the the right fielder to plate Marse with the tying run, but the Lions were unable to hold SHSU scoreless in the ninth.

Game 1
Cody Gougler delivered a two-out, two-run single in the sixth inning as the Lions broke up a no-hitter and scored three runs to take the lead. The Bearkats scored a pair of runs in the first and left-hander Caleb Smith held Southeastern hitless into the sixth.

Alex Marse led off the sixth with a single up the middle and Slade followed with a single to left. Ben Hernandez moved both runners into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. Brock Hebert was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Pace drove home Marse with a groundout before Gougler's single.

The Lions added a run in the ninth to pad the lead in a 4-2 win.

Dylan Hills retired all seven hitters he face in relief of starter, and winner, Andro Cutura (6-1). Stefan Lopez pitched the ninth to earn his 19th save of the season, setting the Southland Conference single-season record once held by Bearkat Luke Prihoda.
