Andro Cutura tossed his first career complete game
Box Score

HAMMOND, La. – Southeastern Louisiana took advantage of early control issues by Texas State pitching Friday en route to a 10-1 win over the pre-season Southland Conference-favorite Bobcats.

Texas State starting pitcher Travis Ballew (4-3), who entered the game third in the conference with a 1.71 ERA, walked the first three batters he faced before Jonathan Pace drove a two-run single to left field.

Southeastern (23-11, 9-7 Southland) plated a third, first-inning run on a sacrifice bunt by Ladd Rhodes and added another run in the second.

The run support allowed Lion starter Andro Cutura (4-1) to settle in after the first inning. He retired 10 consecutive batters into the fifth and tossed his first career complete game. It was also Southeastern's first of the season.

Lion hitters forced Ballew out of the game in the fifth inning after he walked in a run and surrendered a bases-load single to Rhodes.

Southeastern tacked on another run in the sixth and three more in the seventh to complete the scoring against a pair of Bobcat relievers.

The only blemish on Cutura's pitching line was a two-out solo home run in the sixth inning by Texas State second baseman Tyler Sibley.

Texas State (20-13, 8-8 Southland) entered the game in a four-way tie for third place in the conference with the Lions, McNeese State and UT-Arlington. McNeese State was shut out by Stephen Austin, but UTA defeated UT-San Antonio, leaving Southeastern still in a tie with the Mavericks for third.

The second game of the series is scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday. Junior left-hander Jordan Hymel (4-2, 2.77) will start on the mound for the Lions against Texas State southpaw Colton Turner (3-1, 1.36).

There will be baseball bingo during the game and a chance to win free Raising Cane's with the Cane's Challenge. The game can be heard in the Hammond are on KSLU-FM (90.9) and live statistics will be available at www.LionSports.net.
