Lions, Bobcats Tangle In Key Southland Series

Both team tied with McNeese State and UT-Arlington for third place

HAMMOND, La. – Southeastern Louisiana wraps up its second-longest homestand of the season with a three-game Southland Conference series against Texas State. First pitch for the series opener is schedule for 6 p.m. Friday at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.

The game can be heard in the Hammond area on KSLU-FM (90.9) and live statistics will be available at www.LionSports.net. Fans can also keep up with the game on Twitter by following @SLUathletics.

Special $4 admission is available for all Southeastern Lab School Students and all kids will be able to join the Lions on the field for the national anthem. Friday's game sponsor is Gateway Ford of Ponchatoula.

Southeastern (22-11, 8-7 Southland) and Texas State (20-12, 8-7 Southland) are in a four-way tie for third place in the conference with McNeese State And UT-Arlington, four games in back of first-place Sam Houston State.

The Lions have dropped two-of-three conference games each of the past two weekends. Texas State took two-of-three games from McNeese State last weekend after being swept the previous weekend by Sam Houston State.

Brock Hebert (.403), Jonathan Pace (.385) and Cody Gougler (.283) lead Southeastern in hitting. Gougler leads the team with two home runs and 28 RBIs. Hebert is second nationally with 28 stolen bases.

The Lions are hitting .267 as a team and the pitching staff has compiled a 3.28 team ERA.

Freshman right-hander Andro Cutura (3-1, 3.38) will start on the mound for Southeastern. He will be opposed by right-hander Travis Ballew (4-2, 2.86).

Jeff McVaney (.326), Casey Kalenkosky (.283) and Andrew Stumph (.281) lead the Bobcats in hitting. McVaney has a team-high 24 RBIs while Kalenkosky leads the team with seven home runs. Texas State is hitting .260 as a team and the pitching staff has compiled a conference-best 2.64 team ERA.

Earlier this season, Texas State challenged the national scoreless-innings streak as the Bobcats shut out Houston, No.18-ranked TCU and Notre Dame (3 times) in a five-game span.

Junior left-hander Jordan Hymel (4-2, 2.77) is slated to Saturday (2 p.m.) in game two of the series for the Lions. Southeastern's Sunday (1 p.m.) starting pitcher has not been announced by Lions' head coach Jay Artigues.
