Lion Bats Rebound Against Alcorn State

Southeastern hits, pitches way to 12-1 victory

Jonathan Pace hit the Lions' first home run of the season
Box Score

HAMMOND – Southeastern Louisiana used timely hitting and strong pitching to subdue Alcorn State Wednesday for a 12-1 victory.

The Lions (10-3) pounded out nine hits, four for extra bases, including their first home run of the season.

Southeastern first baseman Jonathan Pace launched a three-run home run in the first inning giving starter Buck Bernard (1-0) all the offensive support he would need. For Pace, it marks the second consecutive season he provided the Lions their first home run.

Harry Slade drew a walk to open the bottom of the first and designated hitter Michael Rutland reached on a throwing error by the Braves' third baseman. With one out, Pace parked the ball over the left-center field wall for a 3-0 Lion lead.

The Lions added four more runs in the third inning to drive Alcorn State's starting pitcher, Mike Peters (0-3), from the game. Rutland and Hebert drew back-to-back one-out walks. A groundout by Pace moved both runners into scoring position. Cody Gougler followed with a double to drive in both runners and he scored on an RBI single by Brett Hoffman. Ladd Rhodes greeted reliever Harrison Gary with an RBI double, plating Hoffman for a 7-0 Southeastern advantage.

Southeastern added two more runs in the fourth and three runs in the seventh to complete the scoring.

Alcorn State (1-10) picked up its only run in the sixth inning when first baseman Rodney Warren hit his third home run of the season.

Bernard tossed six innings for the Lions, allowing one run, for the win. The bullpen closed it out for Southeastern as freshman right-hander Kyle Keller worked a scoreless inning his college debut. Matt Pittari, Layton Tromba and Sean Kennel also saw time on the mound.

The Lions open Southland Conference play Friday at 6 p.m. in Thibodaux, La., against Nicholls State.
