BEAUMONT, Texas – Southeastern Louisiana stranded 13 base runners Saturday as Lamar defeated the Lions, 6-4.
Lamar (9-17, 2-9 Southland) used three pitchers to stymie the Lion bats as Southeastern left runners on in every inning except the eighth.
In the third inning, the Lions scored the first runs of the game.
Michael Rutland singled with one out and scored all the way from first on
Brock Hebert's first triple of the season. Hebert scored on
Jonathan Pace's RBI single.
Southeastern (20-8, 7-4 Southland) held the 2-0 lead until the fourth. Lamar loaded the bases with two out after Lion starter
Jordan Hymel (4-2) hit back-to-back batters. Aaron Olivas, the ninth-place hitter in the Cardinal order, then hit a sinking fly ball to left-center field. The ball got by
Harry Slade and rolled all the way to the wall, allowing Olivas to run out an inside-the-park grand slam.
The Lions came right back to cut the two-run lead in half. Rutland was hit by a pitch to open the fifth. A Pace single moved Rutland to second and he moved to third on a fielder's choice by
Cody Gougler. Slade drove Rutland home with a single to right.
Lamar opened the lead back up with a two spot in the fifth off Lion reliever
Joseph Koon, making it 6-3. The game then settled into a scoreless stretch that lasted until the Lions' final at bat.
Rutland led off the ninth with a single off the glove of the shortstop Olivas. Hebert laid down a bunt single to third and Pace singled to right. With the bases loaded and no outs, Gougler chopped the ball to third and the Cardinals threw home to force Rutland at the plate.
With two outs, Fisher singled up the middle to drive in Hebert and cut the lead to 6-4. Pinch-hitter
Sam Roberson flied out to center to end the game.
Lamar reliever John Gilligan (2-2) picked up the win and Machon Trimm earned his first save of the season. Trimm allowed just the ninth-inning run in 4.1 innings of work. Hymel was saddled with the loss for the Lions.
Southeastern will send senior right-hander
Josh Janway (2-1, 2.61) to the mound in the rubber match of the three-game series. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. and the game can be heard in the Hammond area on KSLU-FM (90.9). Live statistics, courtesy Lamar, will be available at www.LionSports.net.
