Box Score
HAMMOND – Senior right fielder
Cody Gougler doubled off the left-center field wall with the bases loaded in the seventh inning Sunday as Southeastern Louisiana rallied for a 6-3 Southland Conference victory over UT-Arlington.
Jason Greenleaf (2-0) worked 2.2 scoreless innings in relief for the win and
Stefan Lopez picked up his ninth save as the Lions completed their third weekend sweep of the season.
Brock Hebert (18 games) and
Jonathan Pace (16 games) each extended their hitting streaks with first-inning singles.
UT-Arlington (13-11, 3-6 Southland) grabbed an early lead. Ryan Walker and Preston Morrow led off the game with singles. Preston Beck drew a walk to load the bases with no outs.
Lion starting pitcher
Josh Janway induced cleanup hitter Michael Guerra into a ground-ball double play, but Walker scored from third. Janway pitched out of the jam as designated hitter Matt Shortall grounded out to end the inning.
Southeastern (18-6, 6-3 Southland) tied the game with a single run in the fifth. Freshman
Brett Hoffman led off the inning with his second double of the game and moved to third on
Ben Hernandez's sacrifice bunt. Hoffman scored on
Harry Slade's sacrifice fly to right field.
UTA regained the lead with one out in the sixth. Right fielder Preston Beck, the Southland's RBI leader, homered to right field and the Mavericks would tack on another run in the inning for a 3-1 lead.
The Lions forced UTA to go its bullpen in the sixth and reached reliever Adam Boydston (0-1) for five unearned runs in the seventh.
After recording the final two outs of the sixth inning, Boydston walked
Jacob Fisher to lead off the seventh. Hoffman hit a chopper to short that Walker couldn't field cleanly, allowing Fisher to advance to second and Hoffman to reach safely.
Hernandez laid down another sacrifice bunt, his eleventh of the season, to move both runners into scoring position. Slade drove in Fisher with an RBI single and designated hitter
Michael Rutland tied the game by pushing a sacrifice bunt up the first base line to plate Hoffman.
The Mavericks intentionally walked Hebert and then Boydston missed with four straight pitches to Pace, loading the bases and setting up Gougler's heroics.
Southeastern returns to action Tuesday against the Tulane Green Wave. It is Pack the Pat Night with free t-shirts and Raising Cane's while it lasts for Southeastern students. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m. at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.
