HAMMOND – Junior left-hander Jordan Hymel combined with Lion closer Stefan Lopez on a three-hit shutout Saturday of UT-Arlington, 4-0.

Hymel (4-1) tossed a career-high 8.2 innings, Lopez recorded the final out for his conference-leading eighth save of the season and the Lions handed the national leader in wins his first loss of the season.

Brock Hebert gave Hymel all the run support he would need in the third inning.  With two outs and the bases empty, Hebert slammed the first offering he saw from Maverick starting pitcher Lance Day (6-1) off the left-field scoreboard for his first home run of the season. He had already extended his hitting streak to 17 games with a first-inning single.

Southeastern picked up its second run in the fourth inning. With one out, Ladd Rhodes tripled into the right-field corner and came home to score on Brett Hoffman's two-out single to left.

The Lions (17-6, 5-3 Southland) tacked on two more runs in the eighth with a sacrifice fly and a Maverick throwing error.

Michael Rutland led off the inning with a base hit to left. Britt Gautreaux, pinch-running for Rutland, went to third on Jonathan Pace's one-out single. Pace, who had already extended his hitting streak to 15 games with a first-inning single, took second on the throw to third.

After Cody Gougler was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Ladd Rhodes hit a shallow fly ball to center field. The Lions sent Gautreaux from third on the sacrifice fly and the throw from center fielder Brandon Lawrence hit him in the leg as he was about to score. The ball kicked to the backstop and allowed Pace, after avoiding the catcher's tag, to score from second.

Hymel scattered three hits and four walks; he hit one batter and struck out five. The Gramercy native faced more than four batters only once in the game and, for the second-straight start, set a career-high in innings pitched.

Southeastern goes for the sweep of UTA (13-10, 3-5 Southland) Sunday at 1 p.m. in the series finale. It is Little League Day and Sunday in the Park brought to you by Academy Sports and Outdoors.

The game can be heard in the Hammond are on KSLU-FM (90.9) and live statistics are available at www.LionSports.net.
