HAMMOND – Southeastern Louisiana outhit Nicholls State Saturday, but the Colonels took advantage of some early wildness on the mound for a 4-2 Southland Conference victory.

The Colonels (9-6, 2-0 Southland) scored a quick pair of runs in the first inning after Mike Barba drew a leadoff walk and second baseman Philip Lyons doubled to right field. Designated hitter Jeremy Hill drove in both runners with a single to left before Lion starting pitcher Jordan Hymel (2-1) was able to retire a batter.

After the single, Hymel settled in to fan a career high 10 batters.

With one out in the fourth, Southeastern (10-5, 0-2 Southland) cut the Colonels' lead in half on Cody Gougler's first home run of the season.

Nicholls State added two more runs in the sixth. Blake Bergeron beat out an infield single and then stole second. Michael LeGrange walked and Beau Faulk moved the runners up with a sacrifice bunt.

After Austin Flores singled to drive in Bergeron, catcher Evan Weibel laid down a suicide squeeze to plate LeGrange.

The Lions once again cut the lead in half with an eighth-inning run. Jonathan Pace singled off of Colonel reliever Brad Delatte and advanced to third on a double by Gougler. Pace eventually scored on a one-out grounder by Ladd Rhodes.

The series returns to Thibodaux, La., Sunday for the series finale. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m. with Lions' senior right-hander Josh Janway (2-0) matching up against left-hander Mike Wisecarver (0-1) for Nicholls State.
