HAMMOND – The Southeastern Louisiana University men's basketball team looks to build momentum heading into next month's Southland Conference Tournament as it travels to face league rival Lamar on Wednesday at the Montagne Center.
Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. The game can be heard in the Hammond area on KSLU-FM (90.9) and on the internet at www.LionSports.net.
In its last game, Southeastern (9-14, 3-8 SLC) snapped a four-game losing streak as it rallied from a 10-point deficit and defeated Northwestern State, 66-61, on Saturday. The double-digit rally was the Lions' second of the year and first since coming back from 16 points down against Central Arkansas and posting a 75-71 overtime victory.
Southeastern, which sits one-half game behind Nicholls State for eighth-place in the league standings, placed three players in double figures, highlighted by
Jeremy Campbell's team-high 14 points.
Roosevelt Johnson added 13 and
Elgin Bailey 12 to lead the Lions to their seventh win over their in-state rival in the last eight meetings.
Johnson leads Southeastern in scoring at 9.8 points per game and is sixth in the Southland Conference at 7.0 rebounds per contest. Bailey, who grabbed a team-high nine rebounds against Northwestern State, is next in scoring at 8.8 points per game and 6.4 rebounds.
Daron Populist, fourth in the Southland Conference in 3-point shooting (44.0 percent), is next in scoring at 7.9 followed by Campbell (7.6),
DeShawn Patterson (5.7) and
Todd Nelson (5.2).
Patterson, who is second in school history in steals (165) and tied for second in assists (357), can etch his name further in to the Southeastern record books against its SLC East rivals. The Houma native will pass former Lion Joe Venable for second in career assists and is four steals shy of tying former Lion Hank Washington for the career mark.
Lamar (16-9, 7-4 SLC), under first-year coach Pat Knight, have won 10 of 11 games on its home floor and sport two of the top five scorers in the league in Mike James and Anthony Miles.
James, who is third in the league in scoring, leads the Cardinals with a 16.4 average with Miles ranking fifth in the league at 14.6. Devon Lamb, who is third on the team in scoring at 11.6 points, leads Lamar with 8.2 rebounds per game while Brandon Davis is fourth on the team in scoring at 10.2 points.
Lamar won the previous meeting between the teams two weeks ago, 83-59, as Davis scored a game-high 21 points to lead three players. Miles added 19 points for Lamar while Lamb posted a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
