Lions Sweep Southland Football Weekly Award

First time Southeastern sweeps league's weekly honors

FRISCO, Texas – After a convincing 42-27 victory over Stephen F. Austin on Saturday, three members of the Southeastern Louisiana University football team earned weekly honors by the Southland Conference in a release by the league office on Monday.

Freshman running back Xavier Roberson was named the Southland Offensive Player of the Week, defensive back Tyler Stoddard was named the league's Defensive Player of the Week and punter Beau Mothe claimed the league's Special Teams Player of the Week. The sweep was the first for Southeastern since the school joined the Southland Conference as a football member in 2005.

Roberson, a converted defensive back, recorded his first 100-yard game of his career with 117 yards and a pair of touchdowns on 21 carries. He capped an 11-play, 76-yard drive on the Lions' opening possession with a 30-yard TD run before adding an 8-yard TD in the fourth quarter to cap a 12-play, 87-yard drive.

The true freshman, who totaled 235 all-purpose yards in the contest, also returned a kickoff 96 yards for a touchdown after SFA had taken a 21-14 lead with 1:05 remaining in the first half. The return was the fifth-longest in school history and was the first to be returned for a touchdown since Ray Perkins returned a kick 94 yards against Mississippi Valley State in 2004.

Stoddard recorded a team-high 10 tackles and added an interception as he was part of a defensive effort that limited a high-octane SFA offense that was averaging 513 yards total offense on the season, including 416 yards passing, to 380 and 170 respectively. Stoddard stopped an SFA drive in the second quarter with an interception at the SLU 15 and helped extend the Lions' drive on the ensuing possession with a 21-yard pass reception on a fake punt.

Mothe, from Belle Chasse, earned Special Teams honors for the second time in his career after he averaged 45.2 yards per punt on five attempts. The former Jesuit High product converted on a fake punt for the second time this season with a 21-yard pass to Stoddard and teamed with long snapper Rogers Mueller on a successful 2-point conversion in the third quarter that gave the Lions a 35-27 lead it would not relinquish.

Southeastern (4-6, 4-2 SLC) will close out the season on Thursday when it travels to Thibodaux to face arch-rival Nicholls State in the annual River Bell Classic. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
