JACKSON, Miss. – The Southeastern Louisiana University volleyball team dropped a four-set, non-conference match Wednesday at Jackson State.
Southeastern (5-10) won the first set before Jackson State roared back to take the final three and the match, 26-24, 17-25, 23-25, 16-25.
Senior
Courtney Donald led all hitters with 18 kills (.289 attack percentage) while freshman
Veronica Turk added 11 kills (.348) for the Lady Lions. Donald also contributed four blocks.
Down 10-7 in the first set, a pair of kills by Donald pushed Southeastern on a 4-0 run to regain the lead. The Lady Lions twice fell behind by three and again by four, but rallied every time to tie the set, 24-24. Kills by Donald and Turk sealed the first-set win for Southeastern.
The Lady Lions struggled offensively (.043) in the second set, but it was the serving of Jackson State (7-11) that proved to be the difference. Jenna Siddiqui served up seven points in a row toward the end of the set.
Southeastern's hitting returned to form in the third set (.333), but couldn't overcome five service errors.
Jackson State quickly built a 10-4 lead in the fourth set and never looked back as Southeastern hit negative (-.097) in the finale.
Christine Edwards, the national leader in service aces (1.02 per set), recorded five aces and added 11 kills to lead Jackson State. Siddiqui contributed 40 assists and Angelica Kelley tallied 19 digs.
Mikayla Shippy recorded 22 assists for the Lady Lions while
Becky Bekelja contributed 19.
Lindsey Young led Southeastern with 13 digs while
Brooke Balser and
Megan McMillin each posted nine.
Southeastern returns to Southland Conference play at 2 p.m. Saturday at Nicholls State.
