BEAUMONT, Texas – The Southeastern Louisiana University volleyball team defeated Lamar Tuesday in a pivotal Southland Conference match, 25-19, 19-25, 26-24, 28-26.
With the win, Southeastern (9-14, 4-9 Southland) moved three matches ahead of Lamar (9-18, 1-12 Southland) and McNeese State for the eighth and final spot in the Southland Conference Tournament with five conference contests remaining in the 2012 regular season.
Senior
Courtney Donald (16 kills) led three Lady Lions in double-digit kills, including
Tamra Grayson and
Veronica Turk. Grayson established a career high with 13 kills while Turk contributed 12 and recorded a career-best .409 attack percentage. As a team, Southeastern hit .301 for the match and posted double-digit blocks (11 team blocks) for the fifth-straight match.
In the first set, Southeastern recorded 18 kills, with only one attack error, for a .531 attack percentage. Grayson (.714) and Donald (.545) led the way as the Lady Lions built an early, 5-1 lead and made it hold up.
Turk came on strong in the third set as Southeastern fought off some mid-match struggles. The freshman recorded seven of her 12 kills in the set while hitting at a .455 clip.
Dominant hitting returned for the Lady Lions as a whole in the fourth and final set. Donald (.600),
Becky Bekelja (.571), Turk (.500),
Mikayla Shippy (.500) and Grayson (.444) combined for 19 kills with just a single attack error. Bekelja posted five of her eight kills in the set.
Sierra Whitaker recorded a double-double (17 kills, 10 digs) while teaming with Wendy Krell (15 kills) and Cortney Moore (11 kills) to lead Lamar in hitting. Alex Morford handed out a match-high 54 assists and Megan Schwartz posted 22 digs for the Cardinals.
Bekelja dished out 42 assists and
Megan McMillin led the Lady Lions with 15 digs.
Southeastern returns to action at 6 p.m. Thursday against Stephen F. Austin in a Southland Conference contest at the University Center.
