HAMMOND – The Southeastern Louisiana University men's basketball team opens a stretch where it plays four of its next five games at home beginning Saturday when it hosts arch-rival Nicholls State in a Southland Conference contest at the University Center.
Tipoff is at 6 p.m. The game can be heard in the Hammond area on KSLU-FM (90.9) and on the internet at www.LionSports.net.
Southeastern (7-9, 1-3 SLC), which is 7-0 at home this season and will host league rivals Central Arkansas (Jan. 25), Lamar (Feb. 1) and Sam Houston State (Feb. 4), had its two-game winning streak snapped on Wednesday in a 61-47 loss at McNeese State. The Lions fell behind by 21 points in the first half before a rally in the second fell short.
Jeremy Campbell scored 11 points to lead Southeastern in the contest with
Daron Populist adding 10.
Roosevelt Johnson grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds for the Lions, who held McNeese State to 8-for-29 aim (28 percent) from the floor in the second half.
Johnson leads the Lions in scoring (10.1), rebounds (7.6) and blocks (0.9) while
Elgin Bailey (8.1 ppg.), Populist (8.0),
DeShawn Patterson (6.5) and Campbell (5.6) are next in the scoring column.
Nicholls State (4-13, 0-5 SLC) has dropped its last six games that began on Dec. 19 at North Carolina. The Colonels, whose non-conference schedule has also included LSU, Tulane, Auburn and Texas, dropped a 99-76 setback at UCA on Wednesday.
Trevon Lewis leads the Colonels in scoring (14.1) and rebounds (6.1) with Chris Talkington averaging 10.4 points. Bryan Hammond (9.4), Shane Rillieux (7.5), Dantrell Thomas (7.4) and Sam McBeath (6.9) are part of an offense that averages 66.2 points and 6.9 3-pointers per game.
Southeastern leads the all-time series between the schools, 47-39, including a 50-43 victory in the 2010-11 regular-season finale at the University Center.
