Lions To Face McNeese State Looking For Elusive Road Win

Southeastern won last year's contest in Lake Charles, 81-74

HAMMOND – The Southeastern Louisiana University men's basketball team heads back out on the road on Wednesday when it travels west to face in-state rival McNeese State in a Southland Conference game at Burton Coliseum.

Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. The game can be heard in the Hammond area on KSLU-FM (90.9) and on the internet at www.LionSports.net.

Southeastern (7-8, 1-2 SLC), which earned a 67-55 victory over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in the University Center on Saturday, looks to secure its first victory on the road this season in nine tries. The Lions' last road win came on March 2, 2011 when they posted an 81-74 victory over McNeese State (6-9, 2-1 SLC) in the final week of the regular season.

Senior DeShawn Patterson led Southeastern in its last contest, scoring 14 points to lead four players in double figures. Elgin Bailey added 11 points for the Lions while Roosevelt Johnson and Jeremy Campbell scored 10 points each as Southeastern claimed its second-ever victory over TAMU-CC in seven tries.

With leading scorer Brandon Fortenberry out of the lineup with a foot injury since early December, Johnson has paced Southeastern in scoring at 10.6 points per game. Bailey is averaging 8.3 points and a team-high 7.5 rebounds for the Lions while Daron Populist (7.9 ppg.), Patterson (6.5), Campbell (5.2) and Quin Cooper (4.6) are next in scoring.

McNeese State, whose only loss at home in five games was a 65-56 setback to Southern Miss on New Year's Eve, opened league play with a 71-69 victory at TAMU-CC before a 57-54 win against visiting Lamar. The Cowboys fell at Texas State, 82-73, in its previous contest despite 18 points and seven rebounds from Patrick Richard.

Richard leads the Southland Conference in scoring at 17.1 points per game and is averaging 20.7 in the Cowboys' first three league games. Jeremie Mitchell is next in scoring for McNeese State at 11.1 points per game with Dontae Cannon (9.7) and Rudy Turner (8.5) following.

Turner is the Cowboys' top rebounder at 6.7 per game while Richard and Cannon have dished out a team-high 38 assists each.

After facing McNeese State, Southeastern will play four of its next five games at home beginning Saturday when it hosts Nicholls State in a 6 p.m. contest.
