HAMMOND – DeShawn Patterson scored 14 points to lead four players in double figures and Southeastern Louisiana clamped down defensively to pull away and defeat Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 67-55, in a Southland Conference game Saturday at the University Center.
Elgin Bailey added 11 points while
Jeremy Campbell and
Roosevelt Johnson scored 10 each for Southeastern (7-8, 1-2 SLC), which improved to 7-0 at home and gave head coach Jim Yarbrough his 200th career victory. Johnson grabbed 12 rebounds to record his third double-double of the season and fifth of his career as Southeastern snapped a two-game losing streak to A&M-CC (2-14, 1-3 SLC) and won its second game in seven tries.
The Lions opened the game on a 7-1 run as
Onochie Ochie and Campbell hit jumpers and
Daron Populist hit his first of three 3-pointers. A&M-CC got as close as 7-4 on a dunk by freshman Nate Maxey, but the Lions responded with a 10-0 run that was capped by a free throw by
Jan Petrovcic for a 17-4 lead with 12:21 remaining in the first half.
Terence Jones buried a 3-pointer with 6:58 remaining in the first half that closed the Islander deficit to 23-17, but Populist pushed the lead back to double digits after draining 3-pointers on the Lions' next two trips down the floor.
Southeastern led 32-26 at halftime before the Islanders got as close as 35-31 on a bucket by Myron Dempsey at the 18:22 mark.
Patterson, who finished 4-for-9 from the floor, opened a 9-0 for Southeastern with a layup before Johnson hit two free throws and added a layup, Bailey hit one of two free throws and Campbell hit a jumper in the lane for a 44-31 advantage with 13:49 remaining.
The Islanders again threatened as a 3-pointer by Hameed Ali began a 7-0 run that cut the lead to 44-38, but A&M-CC never got closer as Southeastern put the game away with an 11-0 run that was capped by a 3-pointer by
Quin Cooper with 6:27 left.
Southeastern finished 21-for-45 (47 percent) for the game and 6-for-13 (46 percent) from behind the 3-point line. Campbell dished out a career-high five assists for Southeastern while Patterson added four assists and a team-high three steals.
A&M-CC, which was led by Dempsey's 12 points, shot 21-for-58 (36 percent) for the game, but finished 11-for-33 (33 percent) in the second and 3-for-12 (25 percent) from long range. Chris Hawkins-Mast added 11 points for the Islanders while Jones added eight.
Southeastern will return to Southland Conference action on Wednesday when it travels to Lake Charles to face McNeese State (6-9, 2-1 SLC) in a 7 p.m. contest at Burton Coliseum.
