HAMMOND – The Southeastern Louisiana University football team returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Lamar University in a televised Southland Conference game at Strawberry Stadium.
Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. The game can be heard in the Hammond area on KSLU-FM (90.9) and on the internet at www.LionSports.net. The game, which is also being televised on the Southland Conference Television Network, can be seen in the Hammond area on WSTY-TV (Charter Cable 22) and in the Baton Rouge area on WBTR (Channel 41).
The game will also be carried live on ESPN3 at WatchESPN.com and on the WatchESPN application for iPhone, iPad and Android users.
Prior to the game, Southeastern will induct its two newest members in the Athletics Hall of Fame as Willie Shepherd (Football, 1982-85) and Courtney Coutu (Women's Soccer, 2000-03) will be honored in a 1 p.m. ceremony in the Hall of Champions at the University Center. The duo will also be recognized during halftime.
Southeastern (1-3, 0-1 Southland) opened with a rugged schedule that featured road games at Tulane, Southern Miss and McNeese State. The Lions dropped a 48-27 decision last week against 18th-ranked McNeese State.
Simmie Yarborough, the school-record holder in career receptions (187) and receiving touchdowns (29), enters the game against Lamar (2-1) 116 yards shy of passing former Lion Felton Huggins (2,345 yards from 2003-05) as the school's all-time leader in receiving yardage. Yarborough, who is fourth in school history in points scored (170), can tie former Lion Jay Lucas for third in scoring and second in total touchdowns.
Brandon Collins has led Southeastern in receiving with 26 catches for 287 yards and three touchdowns. Yarborough (19 catches, 228 yards, 2 TDs) and
Kory Theodore (14 catches, 195 yards) are next in receiving for the Lions.
Brian Young has completed 71 of 130 passes for 841 yards and four touchdowns for Southeastern with Ole Miss transfer
Nathan Stanley going 21-for-37 for 224 yards and a pair of TDs.
Sam Fairley and
Zeke Jones lead Southeastern on the ground with 157 and 133 yards respectively.
Tay Alford and
Ricky Irvin lead the Lions on defense with 32 and 31 tackles, respectively, followed by
Marice Sutton (25 tackles),
Tyler Stoddard (23) and
Robert Alford (22).
Lamar, which resumed football last season and is playing its first Southland Conference game since 1986, has posted home victories over Texas College and Incarnate Word sandwiched around a loss at South Alabama.
The Cardinals had their best offensive game of the season two weeks ago against IWU, producing 469 total yards including 212 on the ground.
Quarterback Andre Bevil led the way for Lamar by completing 14 of 19 passes for 226 yards and two touchdowns. On the season, Bevil has completed 23 of 46 passes for 373 yards with Jeremy Johnson going 8-for-15 for 114 yards and a pair of scores.
Hayes, who caught 52 passes last season, leads the Cardinals with 10 receptions for 220 yards and three TDs. Defensively, Jacody Coleman has registered 19 tackles and an interception while Asim Hicks has 18 stops.
In the first meeting between the schools since 1969, Bevil connected on a 19-yard touchdown pass to Hayes with just under two minutes remaining to give the Cardinals a come-from-behind 29-28 victory over the Lions in Strawberry Stadium.
Southeastern built a 28-8 lead early in the third quarter before Lamar countered with 21 consecutive points capped by Hayes' third touchdown catch of the contest. The two teams combined for 878 yards and 51 first downs in the action packed contest.
