Box Score

HAMMOND – UT Arlington freshman pitcher Callie Collins threw a complete game one-hit shutout to help UTA take the rubber game of a Southland Conference series from Southeastern Louisiana, 3-0, Sunday afternoon at North Oak Park.

The Lady Lions (8-13, 1-5 Southland) had the leadoff hitter on in four innings, but stranded all five runners that reached base. UT Arlington improved to 16-10 overall and 5-1 in league action. Sophomore Michelle Duhe was the only Lady Lion to get a hit off Collins (9-3), who struck out eight on the day.

UTA took the lead off Lady Lion sophomore Jessie Browne (3-4) without the benefit of a hit. Charne Office drew a one-out walk, then stole second and moved to third when Southeastern junior catcher Meghan Gomez had her throw down to second sail into centerfield. Office would eventually come home on a sacrifice fly by Erica LeFlore to put UTA up, 1-0.

Duhe led off the Southeastern first with a bunt single, stole second and moved to third with one out on a Collins wild pitch. Collins recovered to retire Gomez and senior Katie Duhe to get out of the inning.

The Lady Mavericks looked to break open the game in the bottom of the third inning, loading the bases with a pair of walks and an Office single. Taylor Zink then ripped a shot into the left centerfield gap, but Michelle Duhe made a diving stop to end the threat and save several runs.

Southeastern was not so fortunate in the top of the fourth inning. Kersti Rowan led off the frame with a single, moved to second on a passed ball and scored two outs later on a single by Courtney Zink. Stephanie Gonzalez then chased Browne from the game with a double into the left field corner that put UTA up, 3-0.

Sophomore Kenna Terry kept the lead at three by retiring Office to end the fourth. Terry, who picked up her first win as a Lady Lion on Saturday, had another strong outing on Sunday, allowing one hit in 3.1 innings of shutout relief.

Southeastern's best chance to get back into it came in the bottom of the sixth inning. Collins hit Michelle Duhe and then walked sophomore Kelsey Nichols to put a pair of runners on with no outs. However, the UTA freshman bounced back to retire Gomez, Katie Duhe and junior Katie Matthews to keep the Lady Lions off the board. Collins sat the Lady Lions down in order in the seventh to complete the shutout.

Southeastern will be back in action on Tuesday, facing Alcorn State at 1 p.m. in Lorman, Miss.
