HAMMOND – The Southeastern Louisiana University men's basketball team opens the second half of its Southland Conference schedule on Wednesday when it plays host to West Division co-leader UTSA at the University Center.
Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. The game can be heard on the internet at www.LionSports.net. Live statistics will also be available at www.LionSports.net.
Unbeaten in six games at home this season and 12 contests dating back to 2009-10, Southeastern (10-10, 4-4 Southland) plays five of its final eight regular-season games in the friendly confines where it is 20-1 in the past two seasons and 88-18 since 2003-04.
The Lions had a two-game winning streak snapped last Saturday in a 75-65 loss at Sam Houston State. Prior to the SHSU game, Southeastern had earned a 93-84 win over Northwestern State at home before edging Lamar, 89-87, for its first SLC road win of the season.
Trent Hutchin posted his second consecutive 32-point game – and third of the season – in last Saturday's contest in Huntsville. The senior guard, who was named LSWA Player of the Week on Monday, became the first Lion since Sam Bowie in the 1994-95 campaign to record consecutive 30-point games.
Hutchin leads Southeastern, and is fourth in the Southland Conference, in scoring at 16.4 points per game while leading the league in 3-pointers made per game (3.0) and free throw percentage (50-for-54, .926).
Brandon Fortenberry (10.3) and
David Ndoumba (10.2) are next in scoring for the Lions, who average 70.8 points per game.
Gary Dixon (9.1),
Deshawn Patterson (6.4),
Rodney Jones (5.6),
Roosevelt Johnson (5.5) and
Jason Marks (5.2) are part of a balanced Southeastern attack that ranks seventh in the league in scoring, fifth in field goal percentage (.443) and third in 3-point field goal percentage (.347).
Ndoumba, who leads Southeastern and is seventh in the league in rebounds (7.4), is second in the Southland Conference in blocked shots (2.1) and eighth in field goal percentage (.551).
Fortenberry (3.7) and Patterson (3.6) rank seventh and ninth, respectively, in the Southland Conference in assists while Patterson (1.6) is seventh in the league in steals.
UTSA, which is tied with Texas State and UT Arlington for the lead in a crowded West Division, enters the game with the league's best road record (4-6) including wins at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Northwestern State.
The Roadrunners have won two straight contests and five of their last six overall after opening Southland Conference play at 1-2. UTSA opened its two-game win streak with a 70-62 win against visiting UTA before posting a 70-64 victory over visiting Lamar on Saturday.
UTSA's Devin Gibson, the only player in NCAA Division I averaging 15 points (15.8), five rebounds (5.3), five assists (5.5) and three steals per game (3.0), leads the Roadrunners. The senior has helped the Roadrunners win the last three meetings in the series, including two straight in Hammond.
Melvin Johnson III (14.2) and Jeromie Hill (13.5) are next in scoring for the Roadrunners, followed by Stephen Franklin (6.7) and Sei Paye (5.1).
After facing UTSA, Southeastern will return to action on Saturday when it visits Northwestern State in a 2 p.m. contest at Prather Coliseum.
