Second Half Rally Helps SHSU Defeat Southeastern, 75-65

Lions go final 9:17 without a basket; back at home Wednesday vs. UTSA

HUNTSVILLE, Texas – Joston Crow scored 16 of his 20 points in the second half and Sam Houston State rallied from a 13-point deficit to rally and defeat Southeastern Louisiana, 75-65, in a Southland Conference game Saturday at Johnson Coliseum.

Crow added nine rebounds and eight assists for SHSU (11-10, 4-4 SLC), which outscored Southeastern (10-10, 4-4 SLC), 43-29, in the second half including 41-20 over the final 15:37. Gilberto Clavell added 20 points and 10 rebounds for SHSU while Nafis Richardson came off the bench to score 19.

Southeastern led 47-34 with 15:37 remaining after Trent Hutchin sank a pair of free throws before SHSU chipped away at the lead. The Lions led 58-53 on a layup by Gary Dixon, but Southeastern did not make a basket the rest of the game.

SHSU went ahead for good as it went on an 18-2 run, beginning with two free throws by Clavell with 9:01 left. The Bearkats capped the run on a three-point play by Crow with 5:07 left that put SHSU ahead, 71-60.

Hutchin scored 32 points for Southeastern, matching his career-high set in games against Loyola and Lamar. The senior went 7-for-14 from the floor and 13-for-14 from the free throw line, but was limited to 1-for-4 from the floor in the second half.

David Ndoumba added eight points and six rebounds for Southeastern while Brandon Fortenberry pulled down seven rebounds to lead the Lions.

Southeastern will return to action on Wednesday when it plays host to UTSA in a 7 p.m. contest in the University Center.
