HAMMOND – Southeastern Louisiana freshman pitcher Jessie Browne threw the fourth no-hitter in school history, while sophomore Kelsey Nichols and junior Jordan Logan had four hits each to lead the Lady Lions to a doubleheader sweep of Arkansas-Pine Bluff in non-conference softball action Sunday afternoon at North Oak Park.

In the opener, Logan, junior Meghan Gomez and freshman Tori Sheppard had two hits apiece in an 8-0 mercy-rule victory for Southeastern (7-7). Browne (3-2) walked 10, but struck out six and held UAPB hitless in her second complete-game shutout win of the season. The no-hitter was Southeastern's first since former Lady Lion Katelyn Thomason held Mississippi Valley State hitless in a 4-0 Lady Lion triumph on Feb. 19, 2010.

Nichols was 2-for-2 at the plate with three runs scored, a home run and three RBI in the nightcap, which Southeastern took 8-2. Logan, freshman Aly Williams and junior Katie Matthews also had two hits apiece for the Lady Lions. In the circle, senior Bailey Zievert (3-0) remained unbeaten in the circle, striking out four in her first complete-game effort of the year.

“We needed this weekend to get some confidence heading into next week's Southland Conference opener,” Southeastern head coach Pete Langlois said. “We're really pleased with the way Kelsey has started this season and we're expecting more big things from her as the season continues.”

Southeastern will return to action on Wednesday, traveling to Jackson State for a 4 p.m. doubleheader.

Game 1 – Southeastern Louisiana 8, Arkansas-Pine Bluff 0 (5 Innings)
In the top of the first, Browne walked three batters to load the bases with one out. However, she struck out Tanisha Bradford and Jill Howard to keep UAPB off the board.

The Lady Lions got to UAPB starter Ce Ce Kolesar right away in the bottom of the first. Kolesar walked sophomore Michelle Duhe and freshman Megan McCollum, then gave up a single to Gomez to load the bases with one out. Sheppard then hit a shot off the left field fence to score the game's first run, followed by Kolesar hitting Browne to force in another run.

Junior Trish Bliss then ripped a single into the right centerfield gap to score Sheppard and Gomez. A single by Williams scored Browne to close out the scoring. In all, Southeastern sent 10 batters to the plate in the opening inning on the way to a 5-0 lead.

Southeastern added to their lead in the bottom of the second inning. McCollum reached on a two-base throwing error by UAPB third baseman Nickole Frazier and then scored when leftfielder Heather Leigh mishandled Nichols' single. Nichols would score on a two-out single by freshman Kenzie Howe to put the Lady Lions up, 2-0.

Browne's wildness led her to pitching out of trouble in every inning. The Zachary native kept UAPB off the board however, as the Golden Lions stranded 11 base runners in the game.

Southeastern enforced the mercy rule in the bottom of the fifth inning. Logan singled to lead off the inning and advanced to third when Frazier threw Duhe's sacrifice bunt into right field. Logan would eventually score on a McCollum grounder to second to end the game.

Game Two – Southeastern Louisiana 8, Arkansas-Pine Bluff 2
Southeastern jumped out to a lead in the bottom of the first inning. Duhe drew a leadoff walk, stole second, advanced to third on a single by Nichols and scored on a passed ball by Valerie Higareda. Nichols would eventually come home on a wild pitch by Lacie Sutterfield to give Southeastern a 2-0 lead.

The Lady Lions added to their lead in the bottom of the second inning. Singles by Williams and Logan and a throwing error by Higareda put runners on second and third with nobody out. One out later, McCollum laid down a perfect bunt down right in front of the plate and Williams scampered home to push the lead to three.

Three pitches later, Nichols lined a three-run home run over the left field fence to clear the bases. The Alvin, Texas native's second homer of the season gave Southeastern a commanding 6-0 lead.

UAPB finally got on the board in the top of the fourth inning. A double by Howard and a single by Leigh opened the inning. Both would eventually come home on RBI groundouts to cut the Southeastern lead to 6-2.

Southeastern would get those runs back in the bottom of the frame. Walks to Nichols and Matthews, as well as a single by senior Tamra Ladnier loaded the bases. Two outs later, Williams ripped a single up the middle to score Nichols and Ladnier and put the Lady Lions back up by six runs.

UAPB never threatened again, as the Golden Lions could only manage two hits off Zievert in the final three innings.
