HAMMOND – Freshman Brandon Edwards tipped in a missed shot with 2.7 seconds remaining in overtime and UT Arlington rallied from a double-digit deficit for the second straight game and defeated Southeastern Louisiana, 68-66, in a Southland Conference game Saturday at the University Center.
Bo Ingram scored a team-high 13 points, including a pair of game-tying free throws with 1:04 left in the extra period, as UTA (13-12, 7-5 SLC) scored the game's final four points. The Mavs, who rallied from a 15-point deficit in defeating Stephen F. Austin on Wednesday, trailed 27-14 with 5:53 remaining in the first half before closing out with a 16-3 run to knot the score at 30-30 at halftime.
UTA took a 63-60 lead with 2:40 remaining in the game on a basket by LaMarcus Reed before Southeastern (12-12, 6-6 SLC) tied the game on a three-point play by
David Ndoumba with 37 seconds left.
After a UTA timeout with 9.9 seconds left, Cameron Catlett sank a potential game-winning bucket as time expired, but the shot was over-ruled after Catlett was called for a shot-clock violation. A desperation three-quarter court shot by Southeastern's
Gary Dixon bounced off the back iron, forcing overtime.
Both teams traded free throws before a layup by
Jason Marks gave Southeastern a 66-64 lead with 2:12 left. Southeastern missed its final two attempts from the floor, including a layup by
Brandon Fortenberry that would have given the Lions a four-point lead heading into the final minute.
After Ingram's game-tying free throws in the extra session, Dixon missed an open 3-pointer for the Lions in the right corner for the Lions and the Mavs worked the ball to freshman Shaquille White-Miller. His shot in the lane was off the mark, but Edwards slipped in behind the Southeastern defense and tipped in the eventual game-winning shot for his only bucket of the game.
Southeastern, which lost its second straight game at home for the first time since the 2008-09 season, opened the game on a 10-2 run with Ndoumba scoring seven points during the stretch.
A basket by Ndoumba, who led all players with 18 points, gave Southeastern a 24-14 lead after converting his own miss with 7:03 left in the first half before a 3-pointer by Dixon gave the Lions their largest lead of the game.
UTA outscored Southeastern, 11-1, over the final 4:11 behind a pair of 3-pointers by Ingram. Southeastern missed its final six shots of the half and finished 8-for-31 (25.8 percent) from the floor in the first 20 minutes.
After a season-low 18-for-47 (38.3 percent) performance from the floor in a 57-52 loss to Lamar on Wednesday, Southeastern finished a frigid 20-for-62 (32.3 percent) against the Mavs. The Lions forced 22 turnovers which led to a 25 points, but UTA dominated the boards with a 48-29 advantage.
