Lions Fall In Overtime At Southeast Missouri, 63-61

Southeastern off for final exams; resumes play Dec. 12 against Southern

Box Score

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Tyler Stone scored 18 points, including the eventual game-winner with 4.7 seconds left in overtime as Southeast Missouri held off Southeastern Louisiana, 63-61, in a nonconference game Saturday at the Show Me Center.

Marland Smith and Corey Wilford scored 11 points each for SEMO (4-4), which improved to 4-0 at home this season and used a 14-3 run in the final 6:00 of the first half to take a 33-25 lead at halftime. Leon Powell added 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Redhawks, who held a 42-36 advantage on the boards and limited Southeastern (4-3) to 21-for-58 (36.2 percent) from the floor and 4-for-19 (21.1 percent) from behind the 3-point line.

“We fought and clawed to put ourselves in position to get the game to overtime,” Southeastern head coach Jim Yarbrough said. “But we had a period in the final eight minutes of the first half where we had seven turnovers that led to 12 points for Southeast Missouri. We have to grow this team, somehow, someway. We have a week until our next game to get better.”

Stone, who pulled down 17 rebounds, gave the Redhawks their final lead of the game after Brandon Fortenberry missed a 3-pointer from the top of the key. Stone took a pass on the left block from Logan Nutt and scored over a Lion defender to put SEMO ahead for good.

After a pair of timeouts, Southeastern drove the length of the floor, but a 3-pointer by Fortenberry at the buzzer grazed off the front of the rim.

Roosevelt Johnson scored 15 points to lead Southeastern while Fortenberry added 14. Antonnio Benton added eight points and a career-high nine rebounds for Southeastern while Jan Petrovcic added seven points.

Southeastern trailed 54-45 with 3:20 remaining on a basket by Marcus Brister before chipping away at the lead. A pair of free throws by Johnson and a 3-pointer from the left corner by Patterson closed the Redhawk lead to 54-50 with 2:02 left. Patterson added a pair of free throws with 1:34 remaining that cut the lead to 54-52 before Fortenberry tied the contest with two free throws with 18 seconds left.

The Redhawks had a chance to win the game in regulation as Brister was fouled with 1.1 seconds. But the guard missed both free throws and Benton grabbed the rebound to send the game to overtime.

Southeastern will take off for final exams before returning to action on Dec. 12 when it hosts Southern University in a 7 p.m. contest at the University Center.
