Lions Visit Red Raiders In Televised Hoops Battle

Southeastern plays first of three straight games in state of Texas

LUBBOCK, Texas – The Southeastern Louisiana University men's basketball team closes out the 2011 portion of its schedule on Friday when it visits Big 12 member Texas Tech in a nationally-televised contest at United Spirit Arena.

Tipoff is scheduled for 8:05 p.m. The game can be heard in the Hammond area on KSLU-FM (90.9) and on the internet at www.LionSports.net. The game can be seen on ESPNU (Cox Cable 301 in Baton Rouge; Charter Cable 302 in Hammond) and at www.ESPN3.com.

Southeastern, playing its third of five consecutive games on the road, looks to snap a two-game losing streak after losses at SEC members Arkansas and South Carolina. The Lions, who will face Texas Tech (6-5) for the second time in school history, close out their road trip with a pair of games next week in the state of Texas starting with the Southland Conference opener at UT Arlington (Jan. 4) before facing Stephen F. Austin (Jan. 7).

Playing without leading scorer Brandon Fortenberry, who is expected to miss the next three weeks with a foot injury, Southeastern has been led in scoring and rebounds by Elgin Bailey.

Bailey, a Mississippi State transfer, has averaged 11.3 points and 9.0 rebounds since making his debut against Southern on Dec. 12. The 6-foot-8, 265-pounder scored a career-high 15 points in his last game, a 62-43 setback at South Carolina on Dec. 21.

Roosevelt Johnson is next in scoring for Southeastern at 10.0 points per game with Daron Populist (8.0), DeShawn Patterson (7.2), Jeremy Campbell (4.5) and Antonnio Benton (4.1) next in the scoring column. Johnson, a former Destrehan High product, is second on the team in rebounds at 7.5 with Jan Petrovcic (5.4) following.

Texas Tech, under first-year coach Billy Gillispie, improved to 5-0 at home on the season after a 74-58 win over Cal State-Bakersfield on Tuesday. Freshman Jordan Tolbert tied a season-high with 27 points for the Red Raiders, his fourth consecutive 20-point game, while Javarez Willis added 16.

The Red Raiders, who open Big 12 play at Oklahoma State on Wednesday, have picked up wins this season over Southland Conference rivals SFA and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Sun Belt Conference members Troy and North Texas and SWAC opponent Grambling.

Tolbert leads TTU in scoring at 15.8 points and 6.5 rebounds per game with Ty Nurse second on the team in scoring at 10.8. Willis (8.0), Robert Lewandowski (7.7) and freshman Toddrick Gotcher (7.3) are next in scoring for the Red Raiders, who average 68.4 points per game.
