Fortenberry-Less Lions Outlast In-State Rival Jaguars, 65-61

Seventh straight win in series for Southeastern, now lead 17-16

HAMMOND – DeShawn Patterson scored a season-high 19 points while Roosevelt Johnson posted a double-double with 10 points and 16 rebounds to lead Southeastern Louisiana to a 65-61 overtime victory over in-state rival Southern on Monday at the University Center.

Playing without leading scorer Brandon Fortenberry with a foot injury, redshirt freshman Onochie Ochie scored a season-high 11 points for Southeastern (5-3) while Mississippi State transfer Elgin Bailey scored seven points and grabbed nine rebounds in his debut. Southern, led by former Lion assistant coach Roman Banks, fell to 3-7 with the loss.

The game, Southeastern's third straight overtime game, marked the homecoming for Banks, who coached for the Lions from 2003-11 and helped the school to its first-ever appearance in the NCAA Championships in 2005.

Southeastern, which played without leading scorer Brandon Fortenberry due to a foot injury, pulled away from a 6-4 lead to take a 19-8 advantage when Patterson made the first of two free throws with 10:04 remaining in the first half. Southern chipped away at the lead as a layup by Madut Bol tied the game at 23-23 at the 3:22 mark. The Lions closed out the half with a 10-4 run as Ochie capped the run with a jumper and three-point play with 0.5 seconds left for a 33-27 lead at halftime.

The Lions pushed their lead to 47-33 on a tip-in by Ochie with 11:13 left before Southern clamped down on defense to get back in the game.

Southern, which held Southeastern to 8-for-30 (27 percent) in the second half closed to within 49-46 on a 3-pointer by Derick Beltran with 7:57 remaining and the Jaguars would eventually take a 58-57 lead on two free throws by Quinton Doggett with 1:30 left.

Daron Populist put Southeastern back ahead with 30.1 seconds left with two free throws before Jameel Grace sent the game to overtime at 59-59 when he made the second of two free throws.

Southern, which did not make a field for the final 2:34 of regulation, went 0-for-3 from the floor in the extra period as two free throws by Johnson with 51 seconds left gave Southeastern the lead for good at 63-61.

Populist added a free throw to give the Lions a three-point lead and after a pair of timeouts by the Jaguars, Patterson got a key steal and was fouled with 4.7 seconds left to seal the win.

Southeastern finished 19-for-54 (35 percent) from the floor and outrebounded Southern, 48-33. Antonnio Benton added seven points for the Lions, who improved to 5-0 at home, and will play their next five games on the road beginning Saturday at SEC foe Arkansas.

Beltran led Southern with 20 points while Mike Celestin added 12 and Doggett 10.
