HAMMOND – The Southeastern Louisiana University men's basketball team returns to action on Monday after a nine-day break when it plays host to in-state rival Southern University at the University Center.
Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. The game can be heard in the Hammond area on KSLU-FM (90.9) and on the internet at www.LionSports.net.
Southeastern (4-3) returns to action for the first time since a 63-61 overtime setback at Southeast Missouri on Dec. 3.
Roosevelt Johnson scored 15 points to lead Southeastern while
Brandon Fortenberry added 14.
Antonnio Benton added eight points and a career-high nine rebounds for the Lions while
Jan Petrovcic added seven points.
Fortenberry leads Southeastern in scoring at 17.8 points per game with Johnson averaging 12.6 points and a team-high 7.0 rebounds per game.
Daron Populist (8.6) and
DeShawn Patterson (6.0) are next in scoring for Southeastern, which averages 65.0 points per game while allowing 60.7.
The game for the Southeastern will mark the expected debut of former Mississippi State letterwinner
Elgin Bailey who transferred at mid-season last year. The Norco native and former Belaire High product averaged 5.8 points and 4.8 rebounds per game in 12 contests for the Bulldogs before transferring after the Fall 2010 semester.
Southern (3-6), coached by former Southeastern assistant Roman Banks, split a pair of games last weekend at Skip Prosser Tournament in New Orleans defeating MacMurray, 66-57, before falling to Jacksonville State, 55-50.
The Jaguars opened the season with a 67-48 win over Dillard before losses to Texas A&M, Rice and Providence. After a 64-61 win over Florida A&M, Southern dropped games against Northern Colorado and Tulane before its weekend split.
Quinton Doggett leads Southern in scoring at 11.4 points per game followed by Derick Beltran (11.3) and Jameel Grace (9.0).
After facing Southern, Southeastern will play its next five games on the road beginning Dec. 17 at SEC opponent Arkansas. The Lions will visit South Carolina (Dec. 21), Texas Tech (Dec. 30), UT Arlington (Jan. 4) and Stephen F. Austin (Jan. 7) before resuming action at home on Jan. 10 against Champion Baptist (Ark.).
